Sharon Harrigan is the author of the novel Half (2020) and the memoir Playing with Dynamite (2017). She has published widely in places such as the New York Times (Modern Love) and the Virginia Quarterly Review. She teaches creative writing at WriterHouse, a literary center in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she lives with her family.

I also try doing a three minute silent mediation and then write without stopping, for 15 minutes. It's amazing what 15 minutes can generate if you only tell yourself you have to write for 15 minutes! This is an exercise I do with students at the beginning of every class.

Long term, if I'm stuck in the middle of a long project, then I take a break from it and work on something short. Or vice versa.(less)

Or "you understand!" My memoir started as an essay about my father, and when people said, "I felt like you were writing about MY father," that was the best response of all.
