Her first novel, State of Love & Trust, is a love story about Pearl Jam Fans and is set in Detroit and Michigan's northern lower peninsula.

Her second, Smokin' & Cryin', is the story of Robin Chelsea, a teenage rock star who mysteriously disappears in the early Seventies.

Smokin' & Cryin' -

A Novel

August 27, 1972. Robin Chelsea, teenage lead singer of Smoky Topaz, disappears into the Atlantic Ocean mere weeks before the group’s double album, Smokin’ & Cryin’, is released. Recorded over one blistering Savannah summer in the dungeon of an antebellum mansion, it’s threaded with candid snippets of the band members’ dirty secrets, bitter arguments, and deepest fears.

In the wake of Robin’s disappearance, Smokin’ & Cryin’ flies off store shelves and dominates radio airwaves to become the obsession of a generation of music lovers. But what really happened to Robin Chelsea?

More than four decades later, the discovery of Robin’s candid writings—juxtaposed with news clippings, legal documents, reviews, letters, personal notes, and interviews—make it possible to finally piece together the tangled truth behind this mysterious rock and roll legend.

City Dairy (deleted scene no. 2)

Author’s note: In the interest of starting Smokin’ & Cryin’ as close to the inciting incident as possible, I cut a couple of scenes that came beforehand. I still like them and thought it’d be fun to share them anyway. City Dairy is 2 of 2.   All Bev wanted was milk, bread, and Virginia […]

I’ve avoided rock memoirs for quite a while (more on that below). Not sure what possessed me to give Alex Van Halen’s memoir Brothers a shot but I’m glad I did.

1. Why are we told Edith found this job “through a website,” then shortly afterwards told that she found this job “in the paper?”

2. Why do we spend the first chapter enduring her bewilde

The first 3/4s of this memoir are genuinely charming, disarming, and funny. Crowe comes across as an earnest, likable misfit, a baby rock journalist more serious than all of his interview subjects put together. The actual stories that comprise Almost ...more

DNF at 41%. No criticism. Just had my fill of this deeply depressing read about the banality of evil in all its relentless banality.
