You are the only person I know who has read this book. I stumbled across it in a bookstore nine years ago. It changed my life, but it would take me more space than I have here to say how. For starters, it pulled me out of the academic world in which I was making a living, and reminded me why I write, have always written. At the time, I was playing with writing a childhood memoir within the context of the Apollo space program; our central Florida community was essentially a company town for the space race in the 60s. Reading Buhner's book somehow freed me to go more deeply than I might have, and to experiment with form and voice. The memoir led to unbidden foundation support for another book that allowed me to stop teaching. That book (a bio of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings) was suggested by the foundation -- not my idea at all, yet the subject, the glorious work of it, the timing, made it a perfect fit. Now I await what comes next. I just moved. In packing up my books, Buhner appeared, and I decided to read him again. I just need to unpack him!

By the way, I once assigned this book to advanced CNF students at UNT. Some were impatient with it -- it is a long read, and takes time, as you pointed out -- but I was surprised by how many offered up their favorite quotes and sections, which had more to do with heart and soul than craft. It seemed the students were hungry for that approach; they just didn't know it until they read this book.

I, too, would love to meet and apprentice with Stephen, but I see on his website he has cancelled all teaching events for the year, due to health issues. I sense this was decided before COVID-19 came to be. I am sorry to see this.

If you would like, I would enjoy another exchange about Ensouling Language after I've re-read it.

And I'll see you on Zoom in a few hours!
