I live in a semi-rural area of San Diego County with my husband, two sons, and a cat with no real name.

Eila Oakes is a pen name, and I've also written under E.S. Oakes. So far, my only published works are short stories, most of which are part of multi-author anthologies.

By day, I'm a school teacher. I'm also a freelance book editor when I can squeeze it in. My current volunteer activities include being a fire tower lookout in the mountains and an archaeology site steward in the desert.

As an introvert, I am happiest away from the crowds of the cities and suburbs. My dream is to hike the entire length of the Pacific Crest Trail (from the Mexican border to the Canadian border) in one shot.

Louise Erdrich
“When we are young, the words are scattered all around us. As they are assembled by experience, so also are we, sentence by sentence, until the story takes shape.”
Louise Erdrich, The Plague of Doves

M. Scott Peck
“The overall purpose of human communication is - or should be - reconciliation. It should ultimately serve to lower or remove the walls of misunderstanding which unduly separate us human beings, one from another.”
M. Scott Peck, The Different Drum: Community Making and Peace

“It is the weak who are cruel. Gentleness can only be expected from the strong.”
Leo Roskin

Dean Koontz
“Never leave a friend behind. Friends are all we have to get us through this life--and they are the only things from this world that we could hope to see in the next.”
Dean Koontz, Fear Nothing

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
“I am looking for friends. What does that mean -- tame?"

"It is an act too often neglected," said the fox. "It means to establish ties."

"To establish ties?"

"Just that," said the fox. "To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world....”
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince
