Josiah DeGraaf is a literature nerd who loves epic fantasy stories with imaginative worlds and authentic characters. He loves crafting fantastical stories about characters who face the same dilemmas we do when we try to do the right thing.

He works as the program director of the Young Writer’s Workshop and as a staff writer for Lorehaven.

Outside of work and writing, he enjoys engaging in lively intellectual discussions, playing board games, hiking to gorgeous overlooks, and hanging out with his eight younger siblings. He lives in a small river town just north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

When I edit, I take one tangible problem in the story (like a plot hole being filled or a character being unrealistic) and then go through the novel only fixing that issue. Then, once that problem is fixed, I move onto the next issue. Taking this approach instead of a chapter-by-chapter approach (where you try to fix everything wrong in a chapter at once) enables the editing process to become much more enjoyable and effective for me!(less)

Was so engrossed by this book I read it in less than 24 hours. Weir has a way of making science suspenseful.

“You're human," he whispered. And I'd always remember those words. "That's what I've always told you. If grace was only for small mistakes, would it really be grace? What if grace is for the things we can't make amends for?”
Josiah DeGraaf, A Study of Shattered Spells

“Chineya smiled. "Each of us has burdens to bear in this war. But with a laugh and a strong arm, there's nothing we can't take on.”
Josiah DeGraaf, A Study of Shattered Spells

“Because what if sacrifice wasn't about seeing what you lost but seeing what you gained?”
Josiah DeGraaf, A Study of Shattered Spells

“I wish we could sometimes love the characters in real life as we love the characters in romances. There are a great many human souls whom we should accept more kindly, and even appreciate more clearly, if we simply thought of them as people in a story.”
G.K. Chesterton, What I Saw in America

“So when the devil throws your sins in your face and declares that you deserve death and hell, tell him this: "I admit that I deserve death and hell, what of it? For I know One who suffered and made satisfaction on my behalf. His name is Jesus Christ, Son of God, and where He is there I shall be also!”
Martin Luther

“I think it's impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not love them the way they love themselves.”
Orson Scott Card, Ender’s Game

“Fairy tales do not tell children the dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children the dragons can be killed.”
G.K. Chesterton

“Salvation is not a reward for the righteous, it is a gift for the guilty.”
Steven Lawson
