I wish I could give this 5 and a half stars just to counteract the negative reviews on here, which I really think are more reflective of marketing to the wrong audience than this book's quality. If you are looking for a straightforward cozy mystery or a fast-paced thriller, this book is neither. But if you're looking for a compelling mystery that cleverly plays with the genre tropes, then give this a chance.

I won't give away spoilers but I will say that this tremendously rewards a re-read. Knowing how things pan out in both the novel-within-a-novel and the meta-narrative actually added to the experience, with me noticing I didn't the first time. It was a treat.

Some of the negative reviews mention this book being confusing. I mean, again, this feels like more a failure of how this book was marketed to perhaps the wrong audience who were interested in a classic whodunnit rather than a layered commentary on the genre itself. But also ... it didn't feel that confusing? Take this with a grain of salt, since I'm about 85% of the way through Gravity's Rainbow and honestly, nothing will ever compare to how disorienting that novel is.

Another criticism is that the character relationships in the novel-within-a-novel narrative felt rushed and underdeveloped. I have to agree ... and it also kinda makes sense given that we're supposed to be reading an author's first draft. Looking at it through this lens, the rushed nature of the relationships, both platonic and romantic, doesn't bother me that much. It feels clear to me that Gentill knows what they're doing on character development since how the fan reader Leo's character evolves over the course his letters is basically a master class on how to skillfully develop a character.

Other things this novel had going for it: thoughtful, sharp, and at times satirical commentary on race, with an especially scathing critique of the aggrieved white male writer psyche who just can't get published anymore because of the big bad wolf of "woke" 🙄; the vibes were keenly late autumnal and I love this; and Boston/Cambridge were so lovingly and intricately rendered. The care and precision of detail on that last point made me feel like I was back on the red line overlooking the Charles.

So if you like meta-narratives and literature that is very aware of its own genre while being playful about this at the same time and if you'd like a charming, if not 100% "cozy" mystery, that requires a bit of closereading, then this could be a great fit. Don't let the mixed reviews stop you from giving it a try.

For me, I now have a new autumnal tradition of reading this book. 🍂
