One woman goes to be a wife a mother and to be force to her will to be a shop owner out in mild of nowhere in South Africa with no one to talk to but the slaves who she doesn’t understand. The other woman goes with her family to have better lives and jobs she owns and runs her own café with half African half Jewish man name Robert .were only people from India could go to because it was the year of 1950 were only colored can do things and not do things and non-colored can do things and not do things. There many laws that people have to go by even people from different countries.
I think the book is really good the two woman trying to figure things out in their lives. I thought it was interesting that they have laws on what race you are like when Robert went to the post office there were two lines one non-colored the other color on black piece of paper. for some people who don’t know him to them he is just a black man but to others that know him he not just a black man but a Jewish man so he standing in the line of colored a white man throws a cup in front of the non-colored line which it against the law for a colored man to stand in a non-colored line and it also against the law for a black man to not lesson or talk back to a white or Indian man the man tell him to pick it up Robert tells him no u do it then the man tells him pick it up or I will call the police so Robert dose what the man says as soon as he bends down to pick it up the man kicks him then Robert stands up and fixes his glasses and walks away.
One of my favorite quotes in the book and it really tells people how good the book is and how much the two woman love each other.as Miriam listened to the record as it skipped along,” in the roaring traffic’s boom silence of my lonely room, I think of you, night and day…” even that name, Cole porter, seemed to be invested with such glamour page 39 chapter two. ...more "
