At age nine, John Pappas left his native Seattle with his mother to begin a ten year odyssey that included four states and the Territory of Alaska, where he began working in construction at age 15. His path led back to the Pacific Northwest, and while still in his teens, he fell in love with the Northwest Coast while on a salmon troller off Cape Flattery.

He began writing in the 70’s and has published two technical books, magazine articles, and short stories. He co-wrote a cookbook, Aphrodite’s Food for the Gods.

When Wolf Comes is his first published novel and a sequel is in the works.

When I have trouble writing it's about knowing what to write. This usually happens when you start a new story because there are a lot of decisions to make about where you come in, characters, etc. One tip for new writers: Don't agonize over how to correctly write a scene - just write it even though you know it won't be quite right. Once you've done that and can step back and look at it you will usually see how you can do it right.(less)

The first thing I read by Louise Erdrich was Love Medicine and I was awed by the interior imagery. Later, when I was writing about Native Americans myself, I went back to Love Medicine and saw more.

Now I'm about 3/4ers through LaRose by Erdrich. This book has already received deserved acclaim. There is more than one way to read LaRose: fast for the basic story, or slow for thecomplex layers of em Read more of this blog post »

“I'm afraid there is evidence to refute this claim of human uniqueness. Cetaceans are one example that are known to share experiences.”
John Pappas

“The fact that we live at the bottom of a deep gravity well, on the surface of a gas covered planet going around a nuclear fireball 90 million miles away and think this to be normal is obviously some indication of how skewed our perspective tends to be.”
Douglas Adams, The Salmon of Doubt: Hitchhiking the Galaxy One Last Time

“I'm afraid there is evidence to refute this claim of human uniqueness. Cetaceans are one example that are known to share experiences.”
John Pappas

“Anyone who is observant, who discovers the person they have always dreamed of, knows that sexual energy comes into play before sex even takes place. The greatest pleasure isn't sex, but the passion with which it is practiced. When the passion is intense, then sex joins in to complete the dance, but it is never the principal aim.”
Paulo Coelho

“I'm not in search of sanctity, sacredness, purity; these things are found after this life, not in this life; but in this life I search to be completely human: to feel, to give, to take, to laugh, to get lost, to be found, to dance, to love and to lust, to be so human.”
