It's Gene Wolfe, what else is there to say, really?

An intriguing collection of science fiction short stories all with a common theme, filled with intricate details and an underlying exploration of themes that you have to read between the lines to eve
Markus and 7 other people liked Carmen's status update
Carmen is on page 59 of 307 of The Children's Blizzard: Dowling's frostbite was so advanced that he lost both legs below the knees, his left arm below the elbow, and all the fingers and most of the thumb on his right hand. But Dowling was a fighter. He lived on to became [sic] a teacher, a newspaper editor, and eventually speaker of the house of the Minnesota State Legislature. “It is what one has above the shoulders that counts,” he always told fellow amputees.

A surprisingly spectacular conclusion to a surprisingly mediocre series. I was considering giving this five stars at some especially strong points. Maybe I still will, seeing as I am feeling generous. But it will take some deliberation.

"Every time the earth moves, you will hear its call."

The Fifth Season is another interesting experiment by N. K. Jemisin. And while I would argue that it has been tremendously overrated, it is still overall a pretty good book with a lot of qualitie

As Easter is high season for crucifixions, it's probably not the best time for controversial opinions, but it must be said that this is quite possibly the most overrated series I have ever read.

The first book suffers from not living up to the hype, a

An overall decent addition to the series, but nothing great. The first half of the book consists of highly unnecessary backstory before we finally get back on track, but from there on it was enjoyable.

Simon (Plague Jack) Watts
“In the Queen’s dream she ran hazily through an emerald mist. Behind her trailed caricatures of elves. Their bodies were shadows, long and twisted. Just one of their strides covered two of hers. They were like harlequins, and their smiles gleamed white as they fired arrows that left bare trails in the Nixus. She looked over her shoulder just as an arrow sliced at her face and severed locks of her scarlet hair. Her bones made an unpleasant jolt as the Queen hit what felt like a wall. A great shadow towered over her, its face a porcelain white mask. Unlike the elves, however, the figure did not smile. Claws plucked her from the fog as if she were a child’s toy, and the shadow's mask flipped open, revealing a familiar face.”
Plague Jack, Sins of a Sovereignty
