Kite Runner, written by Khaled Hosseini, is a story about a boy in Afghanistan who unveils the harsh truth about his family while fighting against his own sins. Amir, a boy growing up in Afghanistan living the life any could wish they could have. His father is a man of wealth, honor, humbleness, and of wisdom. Amir lives his life with two other people whom which he spends lots of time with Hassan and Ali. Their relationship between them is servant and master, but he and his father treats them no different as if they were family. They lived their lives happily, playing games with each other, teasing, and reading stories to Hassan some of which Amir wrote. They were happy, Hassan was oblivious, and Amir being a kid knew no better. They lives came to a downfall the day those two boys won the kite tournament. A scarring and a memory that would not be forgotten, one physically scarred and the other mentally engraved hate for his cowardice. Reading this novel truly is a heart-breaking story, even when you think all is well; Khaled Hosseini makes sure it doesn’t last long. This constant change in emotions for the characters you soon love, and then hate, then love again is truly a book worthy a second read, but never all in one go. The character development in this book is devastating and even more tragic. I could relate to this book, understanding the main character’s feelings and his feelings towards his father. Always trying to impress him over Hassan and yet get no credit for it. However as the book progresses and Amir gets older answers are unfolded in front of your eyes like a magic trick. What I found emotionally devastating was when he started inputting details of the Taliban and the havoc they caused. Khaled definitely is venturous as he starts integrating topics such as rape, torture, and the reality of executions. The way he explained these topics so freely, makes me wonder if he ever has seen death such as hangings and other public executions. Nonetheless it creates a dark atmosphere when reading the book, unpleasant one almost like you’re trying to escape from that chapter in hopes for that the main character in the book would return to America. Either way he did a phenomenal job in doing so, creating an entirely new atmosphere when reading this book. I enjoyed it the book a lot, whether it be those joyful times between Amir and Hassan, or the depressing times when Amir returned to his home country. ...more "

1984 written by George Orwell is a dystopian novel in which illustrates a totalitarian society in the year 1984. The main characters being Winston and Julia tells a tale of rebelling against such a society where no emotional attachment, no private property exists. A society run by hatred and fear in which is heavily ensured by constant surveillance through technological advancements of the ability to listen to people’s thoughts. Winston, a man who works for the government by altering history, feels that the government is doing wrong by constantly surveying people and executing people for thinking things that go against the ideology of the country, known as Oceania. Winston believes that the world is wrong and that he wishes and dreams to find the secret society in which is plotting against the Party, the government of Oceania. He lives miserably in this society, a society full of hate and fear with no hope of the society changing. Until he meets Julia, the ideal Oceania role model on the outside and rebellious on the inside. Winston and Julia start to fall in love with each other while realizing that the world they live in is not sane. They meet up every so often and change their hiding places so they won’t get caught. They have their differences, but they manage to experience what life was like before the revolution, before all of the hate and fear. One day they meet upon an Inner Party member and an acquaintance of Winston’s, O’Brien. He lets them on a secret that the order-Brotherhood- that opposes the government does exist. George Orwell goes into huge depth into creating this society as real as possible. Seeping in historical events and manipulating them so it is relevant within the society that he creates. He also makes the character, so the character’s feelings are relatable to us the reader. He takes on the plot slowly and steadily, but at the same introducing a sense of constant fear into the character and the reader. Kind of like a thriller film, except with a twist of dystopia and reality. I found this book also frightening because of its relevance to today’s society, when I mean society I mean the increase of surveillance of the US. Being watched and heard at all times, not knowing when we make the wrong move. Either way this book absolutely deserves a second read, as all of its contents cannot be absorbed in one sitting. ...more "
