Kay Want Cheung grew up a poor relation in a succession of dour, Victorian households, leavened by lengthy vacations to Middle-Earth. She was active behind the iron curtain during the Cold War, did a tour of duty on Mars base and survived the apocalypse by sheltering with the dragons of Pern. After a brief dabbling with Jedi philosophy, she went on to study geo-politics on Arrakis and positronic logic on Solaria.

She resides in the Australian dry tropics, lives in the twenty-fourth century, but admits to occasional nostalgia for stone chimneys, moorland heather and rain.
