I live in Lakeland, Florida with my wife, Madeline, and a retired racing greyhound named Bean. Bean is now 70 in people years, and I am 10 in dog years, so we've reached a kind of parity in decrepitude that is oddly satisfying. I frequently wish I could be as good a person as he is a dog. He may have the same feelings about me. I don't know. He doesn't talk much, but he does seem always anxious to know where I am and what I've been up to.

I've been writing for a long time in spite of being discouraged from the pursuit at an early age. Sister Mary Samuela, my 4th grade teacher, was not content to merely grade one of my early contributions to American Letters, but felt compelled to inform my mother that I had an “over-active imagination.” Unfo

I don't think there is a setting too far out in and of itself. It's up to the author who conceives it to make the setting and environment believable. It has to work according to its own rules of logic, and it has to work for the characters he or she puts into it. I'm thinking just now of the beautiful, weird, and fully realized setting Frank Herbert created in Dune. His setting not only defined the stage, it was a principal player in both action and character development. This is no small feat. Others have done it successfully, of course. Tolkien and Rowling spring to mind, but I don't think this is solely the province of science fiction and fantasy. These are the genres we think of when we contemplate 'far out' environments, but the same considerations apply to any work of fiction to some degree. My last novel, A Cup of Pending, for example, I don't think could have taken place anywhere but Miami because that is the only place I know of that would have the confluence of characters that drive the plot, certainly the only place that would allow two homeless men the resources they need to accomplish otherwise unbelievable things.(less)

Trump’s Tariffs: They’re Taxing Us Twice

As a retired financial executive, I’ve spent decades parsing balance sheets, dissecting policy impacts, and watching politicians play shell games with public perception. So when I read headlines like “Trump is bringing in so much revenue from tariffs that it’s seriously reducing the $37 trillion national debt,” I don’t just… Continue reading Read more of this blog post »
