Stephen King’s “Gramma” is a story I still recall with a certain sense of unease. It’s vivid and somewhat repulsive—in a good way. Let me explain. While reading it, you become completely immersed in the atmosphere of what’s happening. The events are described so vividly and naturally that this reaction feels inevitable.

It’s a short but memorable story, first published in 1984. At its center is an eleven-year-old boy who is left alone at home for a while with his bedridden grandmother. It may sound ordinary at first, but it quickly becomes clear that there’s something not quite right about Grandma. And with King, how could it be otherwise? The author gradually builds tension, drawing the reader into a world of childhood fears, superstitions, and the inexpressible horror lurking in the darkness of a bedroom. As it turns out, something really is hiding there.

This is a solid story in King’s classic style, where he once again turns to a child’s inner world, showing just how vulnerable a young mind can be when faced with something it cannot comprehend. The narrative is slow and detailed from the very beginning, filled with tension. King masterfully demonstrates how fear grows and takes over the boy’s consciousness. It’s especially compelling to follow the protagonist’s thoughts, because that’s where something truly terrifying begins to form. And when the story reaches its climax, everything that has been building up explodes—suddenly, swiftly, and frighteningly.

The ending is strong, even if not as striking as in some of King’s other works, but it effectively brings the story to a close. What lingers most is that sticky sense of anxiety that remains after reading. King delivers a powerful tale with a vivid presentation, a dense atmosphere of horror, psychological pressure—and even a fair amount of revulsion brought on by a few sharply drawn descriptions.

“Gramma” is a solid and memorable story, distinguished by its intense focus on fear as seen through a child’s eyes. This is King at his finest—disturbing and deeply unsettling.

The people are confident: they have technology, plans, and a strong sense that everything is under control. They act calmly and efficiently, as if landings like this have long since become routine for them.

Almost immediately, something strange happens: one of the local inhabitants tries to warn them about something. What exactly he means is unclear to the characters. They don’t give it much importance, and this is where the story really starts to hook you. As a reader, you already sense that this warning wasn’t given without reason, but the author doesn’t rush to reveal his hand.

The story reads easily, yet with steadily growing tension. Nothing bad seems to be happening, but the feeling of unease slowly intensifies. Simak captures this state with great precision: everything looks calm on the surface, while inside there’s a growing sense that the humans are making a mistake. Gradually, it becomes clear that this isn’t just about a specific situation, but about humanity’s habit of seeing itself as the main force and always being right.

Martin’s "A Feast for Crows" is the fourth book in "A Song of Ice and Fire", and this time the author deliberately slows the pace, leaving grand battles and shocking deaths behind to show what happens once the fighting has ended and both victors and losers begin to sift through the wreckage. The focus shifts to the aftermath of past wars, changes in the capital, political intrigue, and the movement of new pieces on the board, while the old ones are either gone or hiding in the shadows. We also learn more about new locations, especially the mysterious Dorne, where its own distinct game—quite different from the rest of Westeros—is being played.

The book is engaging, though not in the same way as the previous installments. I was a little disappointed that some beloved characters either don’t appear at all or show up only briefly. Several key figures are entirely absent—and as it turns out, Martin simply chose to split the narrative in two, saving them for the next volume. I had to come to terms with that and accept that here Martin takes a different direction, focusing on other characters and other sides of the conflict.

It’s important to note that "A Feast for Crows" is a book about pause, about stillness and reflection. After the thunderous "A Storm of Swords", there are almost no large-scale battles here. Martin seems to intentionally lower the intensity to show what happens when the flames die down and the ash begins to attract the very vultures of the title. Some hunger for power, others are simply trying to survive. Dorne plays a significant role—a hot, enigmatic region that is finally revealed in full, with its unique culture, rules, and compelling political intrigues.

Overall, this is a solid installment of the epic, serving as a kind of bridge between the great events of the past and the even louder ones yet to come. Yes, it reads and feels different—calmer, more contemplative, less action-packed. For me, it’s probably the weakest book in the series, but even so, it carries important elements of the overarching narrative and allows for a deeper understanding of the world Martin has created. And while action gives way here to politics and atmosphere, "A Feast for Crows" remains a strong link in the chain of this grand story.
