The pros: the world building was so creative and precise and immersive that sometimes I felt like I was there. The magic system was interesting and unique, intricate and dynamic. I haven’t read a whole lot of fantasy, so I don’t have much to compare it to, but I was blown away. And the fight scenes made me feel like I was watching a movie. For those 3 aspects (world building, magic system, action/fight scenes) I had it in my head at 5 stars for the first 125-150+ pages. Then, it got so boring and repetitive for like 200-300 pages! I was so g-d bored after all that earlier excitement that I felt like I was reading a whole other book. I almost didn’t want to finish it and kept begging my son to just tell me what happens. He refused because it’s one of his favorite books and he’s been trying to get me to read this for a whole year and thought that I’d be satisfied with the rest of it once it picked back up again. He was right. It did pick back up around page 2 BILLION 🙄! Which, btw, he could’ve condensed a lot of the story. That book did NOT need to be 650 pages long. But anyway, it did pick back up. The last 150 pages were just as good as the first 150 pages and I was satisfied by the end. I just never got over how much the middle 300+ pages annoyed me. Plus, I didn’t like Vin that much. Her personality was too bland for me and she got on my nerves acting like she knew better than everybody else when she had so little experience compared to them. Also, her “love story” was stupid. It felt forced just for plot and didn’t really match her general disposition. I loved Kelsier, but the way the plot kept getting scattered in the middle distracted me so much that I couldn’t even fully appreciate him. And a lot just didn’t make sense. Overall, though, I was extremely entertained when it was entertaining. The good parts of the book were GREAT, so I’ll let the other stuff slide. I may read the next one since my son already owns it, but that m-f’er is even longer! Wth? What is Sanderson’s problem with all these long ass books?? Is he ok?! ...more "
