Robin Hood, Jesus, and the Buddha Walked into a Bar

Stories about the figure we now call Robin Hood began circulating orally in England as early as the 13th century. The legend was widespread before the stories were written down in the 15th centuries as ballad lyrics. And “Robin Hood” may have been a generic term for forest outlaws until the nobleman who stole from the rich to give to the poor began showing up in verses in the 16th century.
