The first thing I looked at on page 202, because I am pretty well read on the JFK Assassination was the authors take on this 'murder most foul'.. His take seems pretty confused to me, and pretty much the opposite of what I believe. The author buys the simple view that Oswald was a communist and killed Kennedy alone. He cites glory seeking Dan Rather (true) as doing an end run around his bosses at local Dallas CBS and doing a story [unfounded story the author proclaims, and I am guessing correctly] about local school children cheering when they heard that the President was shot and killed. Going forward, the almighty Left started pointing fingers at Republicans and Birchers for the climate created that led to this. Oliver Stone's movie JFK being the culmination of this trend, which basically portrays what actually transpired in the Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner) prosecution of right wingers Clay Shaw (Tommy Lee Jones), David Ferrie (Joe Pesci), etc. in New Orleans.
Of course, Garrison was dealing with inconvenient truths, and thus stymied. Just because I disagree with Jonah Goldberg on this JFK matter doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have some good food for thought in this book.

I do plan to delve into this book further at some point.

I just finished All the Kings Men, the 1947 Pulitzer Prize winner by Robert Penn Warren, and thought it was fantastic. I am mostly a non-fiction reader though. This classic is based on Huey P. Long in Louisiana who was to the left of FDR and his New Deal with his Share the Wealth program. FDR was trying to freeze Long out with unfriendly appointments in Louisiana and Long was eyeing a run at Frank in 1936, but was assassinated in 1935.

I very much enjoyed None Dare Call it Conspiracy back in the early1980s. a John Birch neighbor gave my Dad a copy in the 1970s but he never read it, and I didn’t either until about a decade later.
Especially the left-right, straight line continuum promoted over the confused standard that is the norm.. Basically, one end is the right and is small government over to anarchy/no government, while the left is various levels of big government, culminating in total police state Communism.

I took an International Poly Sci elective at Purdue and remember how enamored I was with the Professors idea of a circular scale, with the extreme right and extreme left merging into one, to complete the circle.

Also, was floored by a 1940 book called Smokescreen by former Democrat Congressman Samuel Pettengill who convincingly to me, called out FDR and the New Deal as fascist. Previously, most arguments I had read prior were right wing diatribes calling it Communist.

I am wondering how much Goldbergs book will help me flesh out these ideas. ...more "
