First I did what most of us do, I procrastinated, and then read articles (or whole books) about procrastination and writer's block. I asked for advice at a writer's conference. I read more about developing good habits. Then I realized I already KNOW all that stuff, and what is stopping me is FEAR. So I started dealing directly with the fear by journaling, meditation, and a few months of counseling with a therapist. I'm not finished yet, but I highly recommend going right to the root of the problem and dealing with what is actually stopping you. (less)

If you want attention, money, creative outlets, or just “a cool job,” there are so many EASIER ways to get those things. But if your mind is constantly churning out thoughts like “what if a person like X were suddenly in situation Y and then Z happened” AND you fee absolutely compelled to share these with other people, only then should you become “a writer.” (less)
