Vicky Adin is a New Zealand author of ten genealogy-inspired historical fiction novels and family sagas, holding a Master of Arts with First Class Honours.

With decades of genealogical research behind her, she transforms real family mysteries and immigrant stories into compelling fiction — giving voice to ordinary women whose stories deserve to be told across three series: The New Zealand Immigrant Collection, The Art of Secrets, and The Ancestors series.

Her work has been recognised with a Gold Medal for Women's Historical Fiction 2022 and multiple B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree awards. One reader compared her writing to that of Dame Catherine Cookson — a comparison she treasures.

Vicky is currently writing her memoir, Where Stories Lie Buried —

Meet Sarah: The Victorian Woman Behind Sarah’s Destiny — Dreams, Loss and an Enduring Love

If you’ve been following me at all, you know that I’m a genealogist, someone who loves digging into the past to find stories. These characters live with me and I’d like to share some of them with you… Sixteen-year-old Sarah has dreams far bigger than the Welsh Back inn where she works alongside her ageing parents. But in Victorian England, working-class women don’t get to choose their lives — they

“History is about ordinary people living their ordinary lives, just as we do today, while all around the world is changing. It makes heroes out of some people and victims out of others.”
Vicky Adin

“I’ll let you into a little secret. If you want quality, if you want elegance, if you want individuality, then Gwenna’s Superior Sweet Treats are for you.”

“There is something about words. In expert hands, manipulated deftly, they take you prisoner. Wind themselves around your limbs like spider silk, and when you are so enthralled you cannot move, they pierce your skin, enter your blood, numb your thoughts. Inside you they work their magic.”
Diane Setterfield, The Thirteenth Tale

“All morning I struggled with the sensation of stray wisps of one world seeping through the cracks of another. Do you know the feeling when you start reading a new book before the membrane of the last one has had time to close behind you? You leave the previous book with ideas and themes -- characters even -- caught in the fibers of your clothes, and when you open the new book, they are still with you.”
Diane Setterfield, The Thirteenth Tale

“So please, oh please, we beg, we pray,
Go throw your TV set away,
And in its place you can install
A lovely bookshelf on the wall.
Then fill the shelves with lots of books.”
Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

“The books transported her into new worlds and introduced her to amazing people who lived exciting lives. She went on olden-day sailing ships with Joseph Conrad. She went to Africa with Ernest Hemingway and to India with Rudyard Kipling. She travelled all over the world while sitting in her little room in an English village.”
Roald Dahl, Matilda

“You're like a box of chocolates with the menu missing - the card that tells you what they are. I never know what I'm going to get with you: a soft, creamy centre, something chewy, or an explosion of alcohol.”
Linda Gillard, Star Gazing
