Vicky Adin I have several for different reasons, but my favourite would be Ross Poldark and Demelza because they were a combination of strength of character, defiance against the wrongs of the world, held together by a chemistry others couldn't see. Going against the odds to make something work. Similarly with Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara. Personalities that should never come together because both partners wanted the upper hand. I like odd couples who work for reasons unseen by others. And while I'm talking about odd couples, Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are another pairing that are unusual and unsuited but their relationship worked.
Vicky Adin I'm a genealogist and I love the stories connected with people from the past. Without those people before us, we wouldn't be here today, being who we are. Their decisions, their actions and their beliefs are a large part of who we are.
Vicky Adin Always carry a notebook and jot down thoughts as they come to mind. Get your story down, out of your head and into written form - then accept it's all rubbish and badly written and start editing. Cut back by a third at least. It'll come right.
Vicky Adin The language. I love words. I love being able to describe a scene, an emotion, or a place using all sorts of different words. Also, the fact you can write anywhere when the mood takes you.
Vicky Adin If it's just a that scene or organising a relatively short passage, I go for a walk and let my mind wander. I usually come back with an idea on how to move out of the problem. If it's a larger problem on character, voice or structure, I'll park it, write a blog, answer reader question or write something completely different for awhile. If I let me mind drift from the problem, it becomes clear what I need to do.
Vicky Adin A story about a family of sugar boilers and wholesale confectioners who emigrate from the valleys of south Wales to live in Auckland, New Zealand. Of course, life doesn't go according to plan and they have to survive a series of trials and tribulations. What I don't know yet, is how it will all work out.
Vicky Adin Some time ago, I took my grandchildren to a shop near where I live in Auckland, New Zealand, that still makes lollies the old-fashioned way, by hand. I was fascinated by the whole process and surprised at how easy the sugar boiler made it look. I'm sure I would have burnt myself or at least cut myself. I remembered my great-grandmother was a sugar boiler and
realised I had the inkling of a story. I have stored it up until now to write it.
