Personal Reflection - (To The Introduction)

"The Love Dare" is one of my favorite books. Upon my analysis, the results are conclusive 5/5 stars. The first time I started on this love dare quest was during my second marriage. At the time, I had three children, a recent college graduate, and perusing my career ambitiously. I was in a failing marriage and desperate for any tools & knowledge that could lead to a successful marriage and keep our family together. A cousin who has been very supportive and instrumental in my life (a father figure to say the least) shared a movie with my family called Fireproof. This movie birthed The Love Dare.

The movie, depicted from a Christian viewpoint, provided eyes into a failing marriage of two imperfect individuals that may or may not have been believers. The lead characters are "the married couple" Caleb (Kirk Cameron), who works for the fire department, and Catherine (Erin Bethea) that works at a hospital. The marital difficulties faced had forced both individuals into deciding to divorce. Fortunately, Caleb had Christian parents who had already successfully encountered and reversed their marital turmoil. Caleb's dad convinced him to promise to complete this 40-day challenge before filing for divorce, which he called "The Love Dare". As a result of Caleb's courageousness & commitment, he had a life-changing transformation.

Personal failed journeys with "The Love Dare" caused me to "forfeit the greatest benefits" (Kendrick et al., 2008, p. vii). Today I began the journey again after more than my share of failed nuptials/relationships. I feel that as I reflect over almost 30 years of my life, I realize that one person can't make any relationship/marriage work. My assumption may have been that I could fix things with my efforts alone; An implication that the success or failure of the relationship depended only on me. No marriage can survive without the labor of all parties.

I encourage all readers to take this journey with an open mind and a spirit of self-examination. For those who may have already read this book, the path is even sweeter this time around. On this journey, it is my heart's desire to examine and know what love is. This process starts with getting to know me and learning to love me. In the process, I plan to love (plural) and experience what true love is (to be loved).

Now these three remain: Faith, Hope, and Love. But the greatest of these is LOVE.
