I thoroughly enjoyed this unusual story. The loose structure of the novel almost lost me a time or two, and the ending was a little unsatisfying; but, overall, this is a better-than-average read.

I believe I've read this book before although I have no record of it. While the structure of the novel is looser than I like, the storyline was interesting and the characters fully developed.

Well-written, very interesting suspense novel. White is a very talented and skilled writer who obviously has a strong command of the language and a commitment to excellence in his craft.

A powerful memoir and study of the dissatisfaction and despair of America's working class whites in the early 21st century. The loss of the hope of the American Dream for a large part of society is poorly understood by most American politicians.

I am a big fan of the Palmer men's writing. Typically, their novels are carefully constructed, clearly and interestingly written, and thoroughly revised for clarity and edited for correctness. That said, I couldn't get interested in this one. I didn' ...more

“Anchor Your Stories in Redemptive Themes So We Are Moved to Live Up to Them: Rather than making yourself the victim or the hero in the stories you tell, describe a daunting time of loss, crisis, or criticism or where you made a mistake or acted badly, yet you were eventually able to learn from it. Such stories show vulnerability and a desire to grow and live fully rather than in fear. Then that facet of you can be the place where others can positively and productively connect with you, hard-earned strengths firmly attached together. You can support each other in reinforcing redemptive characterizations and action.”

“the midst of all your pain and heartache, you are surrounded by beauty, the wonder of creation, art, your music and culture, the sounds of laughter and love, of whispered hopes and celebrations, of new life and transformation, of reconciliation and forgiveness.”

“Power in the hands of independent humans, be they men or women, does corrupt. Mack, don’t you see how filling roles is the opposite of relationship? We want male and female to be counterparts, face-to-face equals, each unique and different, distinctive in gender but complementary, and each empowered uniquely by Sarayu, from whom all true power and authority originate. Remember, I am not about performance and fitting into man-made structures; I am about being. As you grow in relationship with me, what you do will simply reflect who you really are.” “But you came in the form of a man. Doesn’t that say something?” “Yes, but not what many have assumed. I came as a man to complete a wonderful picture in how we made you. From the first day we hid the woman within the man, so that at the right time we could remove her from within him. We didn’t create man to live alone; she was purposed from the beginning. By taking her out of him, he birthed her in a sense. We created a circle of relationship, like our own, but for humans. She, out of him, and now all the males, including me, birthed through her, and all originating, or birthed, from God.”
William Paul Young, The Shack

“The most important gift you can give your children is the importance of standing up to injustice. Children will remember moments spent with you. However, it isn't togetherness that creates humane parents and righteous kids. It is the example of integrity that a parent sets and the on going lessons they teach about compassion toward others throughout their lives. A good father or mother teaches their children that cruelty is not something you cause or ignore, rather it is the moment you suit up for war.”
