That seemed insane and of course, had to be rectified immediately.

(Let me preface this by saying I’m not gonna mark this for spoilers because tbh, you’ve had years. Everyone and their Nan has seen this by now and if you haven’t, well… it’s on Netflix. Enjoy.)

First of all - who on earth let my little developing, virginal, Catholic mind read this book back in the day?! Who ok’d this?! Ms Meyer has a lot to answer for.

It’s hard not to imagine the characters as played by their on-screen actors when rereading this now. I was really shocked at how much Edward and Bella were changed to fit the screenplay. Bella had a bit of grit near the start there - she seemed to have copious amounts of attitude in comparison to the almost dull portrayal by KS (by comparison only - we will have no Kristy slander in this review). But Edward?? RPatz plays him like, well, a bit of a bitch. Who’s this insane, dominating, and quite frankly rude Victorian Spanish flu victim within these pages?! He is not my Edward. No wonder I was team Jacob.

This book was basically 8 hours of foreplay. Edward, or the king of gaslighting (“Bella, you hit your head” or “it’s the fluorescents” which I’m not even sure he says in the book but STILL), kicking off on Bella for not doing as she’s told and this girl, this character who for some reason I DESPERATELY wanted to be when I was younger, just nods yes vampire daddy sir and does whatever she’s told?! I mean I know the film isn’t far off this, but it leaves at least a little to be desired. Rereading this at the ripe old age of 31 made me realise HOW fifty shades started as a Twilight fanfic. It all makes sense now.

The end had me cringing. I’m glad they removed her having a bitch fit about the Prom from the movie, instead giving us the iconic Flightless Bird, American Mouth bandstand scene without any tears because Bella can’t dance with two legs let alone just the one. That was a saving grace.

Opted for the audiobook narrated by Ilyana Kadushin, as I had a couple of credits going spare and the box set of books is like £45 which frankly I haven’t got at the min. Would not recommend if you don’t know the story inside and out. Narration lacked some depth and between characters it was pretty hard to differentiate (even from my self-assumed position of Twilight expert).

As I said before, our Steph has a lot to answer for. This reread was like therapy for me - I realised why my cringy little teenage self thought it was cool for my boyfriends to be controlling. I now understand why I longed to spend every waking moment with my significant other. I get why I thought someone I’d just met watching me sleep after breaking and entering was incredibly sweet, and not grounds for an immediate restraining order. But, saying all that, I’ll never understand why she thought dressing Bella in a blue tshirt and khaki skirt would make Edward swoon. Although he is of a past age, I guess? So maybe a flash of the ankle really did it for him.

Still gets 4 stars for being a nostalgic classic. Removed 1 for being the reason I still think I can change men. I’m going to bounce through the rest of the series in very quick succession and I’ll try to make more concise notes for further reviews. But honestly, worth it just for a good laugh if nothing else. ...more "
