Elijah of Buxton is the first African American born free in Buxton, Canada. Elijah is a young kid who is scare of snakes, never liked those since the one time his mother sent him to get some berries, and found a snake. Rumors has been spread that free slaves has brought dangerous snakes from the south. This terrified Elijah. Many tragic stories about the free people’s family who were still enslaved and escaping were brutally punished.
Later on, the story ends continues with Elijah helping find the Reverend Zephariah, who has stolen money from a man name Leroy who has put all his money together to help take his family from the south. Elijah goes with his friend, to find the money but on his way to the south, it may be dangerous to return back to the north.
Response
I really liked this story, even though it was a long written book, I still felt that I could be in the scene. This is a historical fiction book based on the 1800’s were there was slaves in the south and up north there were free states. Many people have risked their lives to get out of the south and find a way to be free.

Classroom Connection
You can connect this story to a history class talking about the time of enslavement and how people that were slaves came to be free because of their hopes and dreams that led them to believe there was a way to be out of it. Students can do research about the time of enslavement and talk about the underground railroad which led many slaves to be free from the south. And search information about the cruel punishment that was put upon the slaves who were running away. I would recommend for the students to watch a history video that is viewable for their ages. And look for different types of books that talk about freedom from the south. Students can also do an English class lesson, and see the words in the book that were written incorrectly but because of the way they were sounded out the words were still understood.
