Even in high school we used to joke that there should be a TV show about our town because it was just such a bizarre collection of people and ideas--aging hippies, uptight new age believers, red necks, farmers, nice regular Midwestern folks, drug addled teenagers and so on.
But after becoming a mother, the story changed for me--I became much more interested in writing about my mother's hopes and ambitions for a utopian world and for us to have this utopian childhood. I felt much more connected to her striving as well as to her failures. I felt them in my own life as a mom. So the book is sort of an aggregation of my thinking about the past and the present, about belief and religion, over the course of several decades.(less)
