Maiden Aunt My fair and one-and-only, Manny: it is the young Matthew that I am most concerned about! And amongst such enouragement from the rest!

Manny Ah... an unscrupulous blackguard, rather than a bird! The problem is that Howard is both... you understand my confusion.

And thank you very much Aunty for your faith in my good character. Sometimes I feel I don't deserve it. I will try harder!

Maiden Aunt Oh Dear Manny, a spelling error!

Manny Fowl natures! Of course! That has Howard the Duck's fingerprints all over it!

I just hope that the burlesque queen in question wasn't one of Beverley's young friends. I wouldn't put it past him. He's the most unscrupulous duck I've ever met.

Maiden Aunt My dearest Manny, I know better than to believe what the others may say about you.... not a finer man in the entire world, I dare say!

Just to think of some of these others! Such foul natures.... encouraging the purchase of a burlesque queen for a young man coming of age! Repugnant!

OK, I've posted it in my review of Pale Fire. Where else?

Matthieu Thanks, Manny!

Also, the "swedish_chick" story is amazing.

I should never have mentioned that, should I? I suppose that when you say A, you have to say B, as the proverb has it. But I'll need to give some background first on one of my longer-running jokes: for about two years, from 1999 until 2001, I used to play chess regularly on the KasparovChess site under the handle "swedish_chick".

It's a very strange example of what makes people believe things (Trevor might like this). Everyone was extremely skeptical on first meeting her... but for some reason, as soon as they discovered that she actually could speak fluent Swedish, they were also ready to believe that she was an attractive 28 year old woman living in Linköping. Unfortunately, I had to discontinue the project after the second guy fell in love with her - I felt it was getting out of control.

The clerihew will follow tomorrow.

Manny Originally a double-barreled surname. Her full name, as you probably know, is "Maiden Eugenia Daphne Aunty-Macassar". She's related on her mother's side to the Shropshire Macassars. Though I'm sorry to say that they are no longer on speaking terms; a very regrettable disagreement over a will and some family silver. The Shropshire Macassars are like that. Aunty's behavior was of course beyond reproach.

Anyway, you can see why she prefers to use the shorter form when possible. I think we should respect that.

David I think Maiden Aunty's last name is Macassar, hence the obsession with doilies, carted or otherwise.

Hm. I think a Doily Cart is an opera company in London. Or is it a vehicle for transporting fancy round lace things? I am really sorry not to be more helpful. Maybe it will come to me by and by...

Well Jessica, I seem to recall from reading Dickens that some maiden aunts like playing this kind of mind game. But of course I'm sure that our Maiden Aunt is nothing like that! She's probably just not got around to it yet.

Manny I told her/him/it that I sometimes posted adult content, and that if she/he/it wasn't comfortable with that, just disconnect. It's my usual warning :)

The word "prostitute" had been changed to "woman". I added comments and changed it back again :)

Jessica, I wouldn't do this for just anyone... but for you, I have added that option. You see how deeply I respect you! Though I felt that, for purely stylistic reasons, I was forced to change the wording slightly...
