Hi Bryan. Mahalo for the question.

I used Hawaiian Pidgin English in a short story set on Kaua'i. It centered around a multigenerational Hapa-Hawaiian family, so use of language was indicative to character, age, ethnic mix, education, and attitude. The choices I made were guided by personality and used with a light touch.

I'm still waiting to hear if the story will be included in an upcoming anthology, but if you follow me on social media or sign up for my muse-letter, you're sure to hear the news.(less)

With the Lily Wong mystery thrillers, I've also been able to dive more deeply into the Chinese portion of my mother's Chinese-Hawaiian heritage and my own father's North Dakota Norwegian roots. Although Lily is definitely not me and her parents are nothing like mine, a few cultural similarities do seep in from time to time. *wink*

I've also had a blast sharing my ninja martial arts training and portraying a modern-day ninja as authentically as I can.

But the unexpected joy about being a writer has been engaging with readers! I may write alone, by I always feel connected.(less)

“I don’t know how it had happened, but Baba’s Norwegian genes had made my Chinese features uncomfortably excessive. My brows arched too high, my nostrils flared too wide, and my lips were pouty and fuller than they needed to be. Even my eyes looked less like Ma’s classic almonds and more like a startled cat.”
Tori Eldridge, The Ninja Daughter

“Never become so attached to following the path that you cease to question whether you should still be on it.”
