November nominations are coming up soon. I'll nominate it right off the bat......are you listening, Mike?

message 1303: by Joy (new)

Joy | 52 comments I finished A Summons to Memphis today. Up next is Loving Frank for my local book group. Then The Complete Stories of Truman Capote and Bull Mountain, both of which are waiting for me at the library. I also hope to get to Necessary Lies.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 178 comments I just finished listening to The Shore by Sara Taylor, with several slightly related stories set in rural beachy (and barrier island) Virginia. There are a few memorable characters and I actually liked the stories set in the present day the best. I would have gladly read an entire book like that, kind of dirty south feel. The audiobook narrators, particularly the woman, do a good job at varying tones and accents.

message 1305: by [deleted user] (new)

just got done with Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn about to start the truman capote book.
I am reading Life in Prison by Stanley Tookie Williams after reading something really long.

message 1306: by Joy (new)

Joy | 52 comments Erika, have you read Gillian Flynn's other books - Dark Places and Sharp Objects? I thought they were as good or better than Gone Girl. Maybe not as clever but certainly creepier.

message 1307: by Laura, "The Tall Woman" (new)

Laura | 2847 comments Mod
Sharp Objects was my favorite. It kind of reminded me of our past group read The Bad Seed.

message 1308: by Joy (new)

Joy | 52 comments I added The Bad Seed to my 'to read' list. It has a really creepy cover!

message 1309: by Tina (new)

Tina | 485 comments The Bad Seed, the original movie from 1956, is a cult classic. Love it.

message 1314: by [deleted user] (new)

message 1316: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Oh yes, Patty McCormick. "You are the best mommy, the most wonderful mommy." Unforgettable.

message 1317: by Ann (new)

Ann Sumner I just finished The Green Road by Anne Enright, an Irish author who knows her way around a dysfunctional household with all kinds of issues, buried and opened up. I loved how real the characters and situations seem, and it's extremely well-written.

OKAY! I've got Bull Mountain. I've got The Complete Stories of Truman Capote. I've read A Summons to Memphis! WoooHooo.

I took a brief sabbatical from Southern Lit and read a hair raising "Scottish Noir." The Necessary Death of Lewis Winter by Malcolm Mackay. Here's my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show....

Scottish Noir? It rivals any Grit Lit you will ever read. That's saying something.

Isn't the term Tartan Noir? I'll have to check this one out. It sounds like it would go well with my Denise Mina and Gordon Ferris collections.

I just finished the grittiest crime novel I've read all year and, for what it's worth, I really liked it. Karl Craven, the star of Solomon's Vineyard, likes it rough, whatever it happens to be. He may not be able to spell misogyny, racism or homophobia but he sure knows how to do them. That said, this is a gritty hard-boiled pulp that was written in 1941 and banned from publication until 1988. The review is here. Now please excuse me while I go take a shower.

Kirk Smith | 101 comments For October I intend to read as many creepy and/or scary books as possible. In no particular order : Rappaccini's Daughter by Hawthorne, Jamaica Inn by Du Maurier, Bird Box by Malerman, Little Sister Death by Gay, and The Fairy tales of Hermann Hesse. Should be a fun month!

And Travis McGee. Don't forget him. I just got Little Sister Death from the library and read the first chapter. That one is going to be hard to resist until October.

Aaaaahaaaa! I understand but wasn't familiar. Tina and I do books swaps with another group. You get paired with another member and have 3 months to read. It's fun and gets you out of your comfort zone. Some are great pairings and other times they're just ok. But it does motivate to try something new or something that's been on the tbr shelf a long time. Y'all have fun!
