Ah. My mistake. You have plenty of levels, I think.

Maybe a "pearl' necklace if all your books have less than 25..."

I'll replace Fire Opal with Pearl since I do like the fact that they are a more hidden gem :)

After that is there anything else you would recommend altering?
If not am I good to post it? and if so which folder? I would assume under Odds and Ends Challenges but wasn't sure.

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) So the final draft would be this:

There are 5 categories and depending on what level you want to go for will dictate how many in each category you read. You can change levels at any time.

Please post the number of ratings the book had at the time you read the book, date read, and your rating of it

Check out this list here or this list as well if you need ideas on books for this challenge.

Levels:
Emerald – 1 Book In Each
Ruby – 3 Books In Each
Sapphire – 5 Books in Each
Lapis Lazuli – 10 Books In Each
Pearl – 15 Books In Each
Diamond – 20 Books In Each

Categories
Books With Less Than 100 Ratings
Books With Less Than 500 Ratings
Books With Less Than 1,000 Ratings

There is no set time limit on this challenge.

If this looks good just let me know which folder in the group I should put it in :)

I think it looks great, Nikki. The Odds and Ends folder is probably the best place for it.

We already have something very similar to this: the 5 Facts challenges. (Yes, I did mean the plural, there are two versions of it.) You can check them out HERE and HERE. It's a decent idea, though!

Jessica I have an open ended challenge idea. You chose a song and I'll create a spreadsheet for you, but you take the lyrics of the song, and read books with the words in the title. For example:
All - All the Light We Cannot See
my - My Life Next Door
friends - Circle of Friends
are - The Darkest Hour (ARE is contained in the title)
heathens, - Heathens
take - Take Me with You
it - Written in Red (IT is contained in the title)
slow- The Slow Regard of Silent Things

That is extremely similar to a team challenge that the Romance Lovers for the Challenge Impaired ran a few years ago, so you would need to get permission from the mods there before we did your version of it here. Also, we did a musical challenge a few years ago ourselves, but it didn't get much participation. It is located HERE. You mention that you'll create a spreadsheet for the participants, so would that mean that you'd want to host it yourself, or are you asking a Mod to do it for you?

Jessica I'd host it myself.

⚜️XAR the Bookwyrm (xar-the-bookwyrm) Jessica wrote: "I'd host it myself."

That works. We mods here would likely want to see your final version before you post it, and as I mentioned, you would also need to check in with the mods over at Romance Lovers, let them know that you have a challenge that is similar to theirs and ask if they're ok with your version being posted here. It's a common courtesy/respect thing, so that no one has bruised feelings between the groups.

Let me or any of the other mods know if you need any help!

Jessica Great, give me a few and I'll give you the final details, and pop over to the group and ask for permission.

Jessica wrote: "I have an open ended challenge idea. You chose a song and I'll create a spreadsheet for you, but you take the lyrics of the song, and read books with the words in the title. For example:
All - All ..."

First of all, your spreadsheet is very confusing. I couldn't understand about half of what was listed there, especially with the lack of directions on the post I'm replying to. Directions really need to be clearly spelled out on challenges, to cut down on participant confusion, which could result in a lower number of participants.

Second, you list some books in the spreadsheet that don't fit the criteria you're setting for them. For example, the words "It" and "With". You've just got the letters in the title spelling the words, when most of what you've said in the spreadsheet comments make it seem like you're looking for the word actually in the title like with "Starts" or "One".

Third, are you going to have a list of what songs folks can pick from, because there are millions of songs out there, and it could get time consuming for readers to have to run to you for their spreadsheets to be updated. It's better to let the players deal with updating themselves, which negates the need for your spreadsheets.

This is nowhere near ready for release, in my opinion, but the other mods may disagree with me. I'd suggest the Odds and Ends folder for it though, if it does get posted.

message 171: by Jessica (new)

Jessica I thought that it would be cool if the member could choose their own song. They can update their own spreadsheet if they wanted to. If it is not needed, then so be it. I'll update you with the official post tomorrow.

We don't really do joint challenges with other groups here, as all of us mods have either day jobs and/or busy home lives that doesn't allow us a lot of time to organize something like that. I was going to suggest that you join our A Million Pages challenge to satisfy your page count challenge desire, but I see you already joined it! I'm sorry that this news will likely come as a disappointment to you, but real life and family has to come first for us. I hope you can understand...

Level 2: A book with the actual colour word in the title-Red e.g (repeat this for blue, yellow, green, orange, black, brown, purple, pink, white, grey). 10 books in total.

No, there's not really a color challenge in the group that I know of. A lot of our challenges use cover colors, but not in the way you've suggested in this challenge idea.

Navi (nvsahota) | 45 comments Hi Mods! I’m wondering if there is a book buying ban type of challenge in this group. My ultimate goal is to have a zero TBR - meaning I have read all of the books on my Kindle. It’s not realistic for me to stop buying books but my plan is to read 25 books from my TBR and then reward myself with one book purchase. Is there any challenge that is similar to this?

Hey, Navi. The only challenges we have going that focus on TBR lists are Scale Your TBR Mountain Challenge, Spin to Slim, and Attack of Your TBR Challenge.

But none of those rule out buying books to complete the challenge. Can you give me a few more details about how you would set up a challenge like this?

Could the reward for reading a certain number of books from your TBR include different types of rewards other than purchasing a book? Just thinking of ideas.

Unfortunately, interest in them diminished to the point that it wasn't worth the effort of setting up new threads every month anymore. I've been considering putting up permanent discussion and sign-up threads instead of doing new ones every month. I first broached the idea of an A.A. Milne and Winnie the Pooh challenge to Trea YEARS ago, but then never followed through. I finally have read a book on A.A. Milne and have enough information to set up a possible challenge. Interested in any input, as I have little experience in this regard.

A.A. Milne and Winnie-the-Pooh – a year long (or open-ended?) challenge
Levels:
The Pooh – complete all tasks and all of the spell outs
The Piglet – Pooh’s small friend – complete one task per item and at least one spell out
The Tigger – Pooh’s bouncy friend – a “make your own” challenge where you may bounce around and complete as many tasks and spellouts as you want

Options (available for any level)
The Owl Option – complete the challenge only with books of 300 or more pages
The Eeyore Option – you may modify your challenge to do less, but to exercise the option you must first read a story with Eeyore in it, or read a book where depression plays a role (your interpretation).

Task Categories:
A. Alan Alexander Milne was born on January 18, 1882
Read a book set or published in the 19th Century
Read a book with the numbers 1, 8 and 2 in the publication date (in any order)

B. Milne grew up in Henley House, a home that doubled as a private boys’ school
Read a book that has a named house in it
Read a book that is set in a private school (boys’, girls’ or coed)

C. One of Milne’s teachers at Henley House was H.G. Wells (!), the man considered to be the father of science fiction
Read a book written by H.G. Wells
Read a science fiction book

D. Milne’s first true job was as an associate editor of Punch magazine, a British weekly full of humor and satire
Read a book where one of the characters works for a magazine
Read a book humorous or satirical book

E. Milne married Dorothy (who later called herself Daphne) de Selincourt, a strong-willed socialite who favored vacations in New York on her own later in their marriage
Read a book with a MC that is a part of high society (your definition)
Read a book set in New York City

F. Milne was a pacifist but had to serve in World War I as a platoon commander and signalling officer on the western front at the Battle of the Somme in France. He was forced to rethink his views on pacifism in the face of the monstrous crimes witnessed by the world in World War II.
Read a book set during World War I or World War II
Read a book with a MC who is a soldier (any war)

G. Milne worked all his life as a playwright, first gaining critical acclaim for the play Mr. Pim Passes By. He adapted Kenneth Graham’s book The Wind in the Willows for the stage in Toad of Toad Hall.
Read The Wind in the Willows
Read a play

H. Milne’s son Christopher Robin was known within the family as Billy Moon (Billy having been the nickname favored by his parents, Moon because Christopher was unable to pronounce the name Milne).
Read a book about the moon, a planet other than the earth or outer space
Read a book where a MC is known by a nickname not related to his or her true name

I. Milne’s primary success as a writer – which would eventually plague him with the moniker of “children’s author” that he dearly wished to put behind him – came from the four Pooh books: When We Were Very Young, Winnie the Pooh, The House at Pooh Corner and Now We Are Six. The books have been translated into more than 25 languages and have sold multimillions of volumes worldwide.
Read any of the Winnie the Pooh books
Read a book that has been translated into more than 10 languages

J. The Winnie the Pooh stories are set in the Hundred Acre Wood, which is based on the real Ashdown Forest in East Sussex, England
Read a book with a named forest in it
Read a book set in any fictional location that is based on a real-life counterpart

Spell Outs:
WINNIE THE POOH
CHRISTOPHER ROBIN
PIGLET
EEYORE
VESPERS
DISOBEDIENCE
