How are they going to make this into a film?

Lauren First of all I really don't think they should because this book has one of the weakest story lines I've ever read.

But if they do attempt it isn't it going to have to be an R-rated movie? Really this book is 60% sex scenes so...
I honestly think XXX movie makers would have an easier time with this film if you understand me.

Kari I 100% agree. Except I think the books are more like 75-80% Sex scenes. And the thing of it is, they're not just regular sex scenes, the whole point of this book is the explicitness of the sex and the S&M aspect. So showing a "brief lovemaking scene" is not even the "point" of the books. I read all 3 books but didn't love them by any means and I think a movie is a hideous idea.

Lauren Haha yes I was going to say 80% sex scenes but I didn't want to enrage the avid fans who seem to think this is some epic love story. One review I read called it "one of the most realistic romances" they'd ever read hahaa.

No it really is a terrible idea. There are so many better novels and novellas that would make good films (you know books that actually have a plotline) and then you have this rubbish making so much money on its own and picking up a film deal. Makes me sad.

People just want their fantasies to come to life on the screen I think.

Ethel Have any of you seen this movie - A Dangerous Method Starring Michael Fassbender, Keira Knightley and Viggo Mortensen?

There is a very explicit scene in there twice where her doctor ties her to the bed naked and beats her with a belt numerous times. Frankly, I was shocked it made it R rated, but if they are allowing those types of scenes now, I don't think Fifty Shades will be a problem.

Nidhi Thomas Oh believe me they will find a way. It will be most probably like true blood. I swear there were some bits with bondage. But now that I am actually thinking about it. I don't know... the book well...umm...huh... there is a lot of BJ and I don't know how they are going to do THAT. But the other stuff isn't too hard. As long as the guys and women's privates are concealed. Hmmm in American Pie Reunion there was a bit where you saw the manly stuff. Oh I don't know! But they will find a way.

To tell you the truth, I rather have them make a movie on a crappy book than the good ones. Because look at twilight, the movies RUINED it. Eragon, what the hell happened! There are so many others! Such good books turned into such bad movies :'(

Jenna i was thinkin the same thing more like 80 percent sex and i thought the same with the remark someone made about how they will make it like trueblood. I also agree its a bad idea for a movie :( and i didnt like the books and i agree ppl wanna see it on film because it makes it more real. and i for one will only go see this movie if they cast Ian Somerhalder as CG because come on lets face it i wanna see Ian naked not because i think hed make a great CG or because the movie would be awesome

Jenna and i also agree that the plot and story line of these books are very weak but they will probably add things to spicen it up

Jenna oh i forced myself to finish the 2nd book and didnt even read the 3rd because i thought it was bad, but yea i skipped alot in the 2nd book because to much is not always a good thing and by book 2 i was bored with the sex scenes and its funny when u skip because i learned she actually like 7 FULL pages dedicated to a sex scene thats over doin it. I like reading about sex as much as the next woman but like i said to much is not always good

message 10: by Jenna (new) - rated it 1 star

Jenna yea i was the same way i wanted to know why he was the way he was and i dunno maybe after ive taken a LONG break from the trilogy i may go back and read the 3rd i read it because it had such a big hype it out sold the hunger games it was compared to twilight so yea i wanted to see what the fuss was about

message 11: by Justine (new) - added it

Justine Saulnier i liked the books and i didnt focus on the sex scenes i was like wow christian grey knows about some weird kinky hot sex things..... i liked that Ana was so under confindent and Christian was always laughing at her and when they get together after a while his hard outer shell was breaking down and they found love i found that was a good plot and in the end they get married and they have two kids together its good for Christian and they love eachother i thought it was a well written love book with funny parts sad parts and kinky love scenes but christian could also be playful and bruting and as Ana says "My 50 shades of Grey" i loved loved loved every part of it

They aren't bad movies at all. they are just very different from the books.
In any case thats how its actually supposed to be. Look at Gone With The Wind, which is one of the best films of that era. Its NOTHING like the book. When you have a source material for a movie its only based on the source. That means you use it for inspiration. You don't follow it like a cooking recipe.

message 14: by Lynn (new) - rated it 3 stars

Lynn I think they will likely focus on the psychological and romantic aspects. yes, they will have to show some sex, to introduce his lifestyle and show the increasing dependency growing between CG and Ana, but they are going to have to have some sort of story line to carry it off. They should (and could) combine all 3 into one film.

I was noting with some amusement that at least two of the major male actors being bandied about for the lead role are outed gays - which is fine - but he will have to be a Helluva Good Actor to pull this role off! Being pretty isn't going to be enough...so the list of possibles dwindles...

I've put reviews of all 3 books separately upon GoodReads....yes, it's badly written, disorganized, with a lot of superfluous stuff in it to pad up the pages...too many meaningless characters....and while I quite liked Christian Grey...I think I liked him more before he got all romantic and emotional.

I could have done without the marriage, and definitely without the pregnancies...and that Ana was so much of a dingbat I just wanted to scream.

Another problem for me was that the characters are just too young for me to care. Christian Gray at 35-45 would have been better, I think, because he would have had even more emotional baggage to contend with.

I don't know that I want to sit through a movie with actors 20-28.....they just don't have enough life experience to make themselves interesting to me.

Having said all that - as a writer myself, I know how hard it is to pound out a book....so I commend ELJ for having had the fortitude to hammer out 3.

If they have a good director and a writer, yes the movie will be amazing! But these days, I don't know a book turned into a movie, just can't get it right. So when they take a really REALLY good book and turn it into a movie, it's badly done and everything is just 2D. I am guessing I feel this way is because I have my own imaginations about the story and when it is played out by someone else's imagination, it ruins your imagination and it is impossible later on to shake that perspective of the story.

message 16: by Justine (new) - added it

Justine Saulnier i think it could be good follow the story line mostly and get actors who look like chirstian grey and ana and all the other characters and edit out alot of the sex and get something different in it and it would be a good movie. and btw i thought the books were very well writen and i did not at all hate the books in my opinion of course

message 17: by Toni (new) - rated it 5 stars

Toni Movie makers are very good at making movies where you just have to assume what's happening. For eg Brokeback Mountain wasn't R rated and could have been quite graphic but you only saw the foreplay really but no actual sex we just had to use our imaginations. Tying someone up is not porn so that could be put on screen as well as the foreplay (whipping, blindfolding etc) but then leave the rest up to the viewer

I almost swallowed my chewing gum reading your post! HAHAHA.
Omg.
You don't mean that, right? RIGHT?

Eragon is pretty much plagiarized from all the books Paolini read + Star Wars. The movie didn't do much damage to that.

Pamela Su Lolly wrote: "First of all I really don't think they should because this book has one of the weakest story lines I've ever read."

If they can make a full-length feature movie out of a Dr. Seuss book, I think they can make pretty much any kind of movie.

Sometimes, not having much of a story is good because the Hollywood writers usually do what they do "best" which is mangle the original story to make their own movie.

Your posts amuse me, Sparrowlicious. Hahaha. And I agree.

message 20: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann General same question that entered my mind when i heard that theu will turn this one into a movie, like seriously??? HOW?!?

Mochaspresso How are they going to do "the inner goddess"? I have visions of little comical mini skits mixed in from time to time. Similar to what they used to do on Ally McBeal. I think they need to go the "quirky and funny" route (think "Friends With Benefits") with the movie rather than just focusing on making it all intensely hot and steamy.

....and please please please re-write some of Christian's dialogue because him on screen speaking the way that he did in the books will be extremely cheesy in film.

Kaila i enjoy the books but not excited about a movie.. i heard they are looking at doing it nc-17 to be able to get all the sex in there. i just think they wont capture the love in the books and only the sex

Sparrowlicious I can only think about how someone might buy the license so that there would be no film at all.
Then again, the film industry will adapt every piece of whatever it is, as long as enough people bought it.

Oh, yes, I saw the movie. The whole part of it was she had propensities for wanting pain during sex because it turned her on. The doctor had an affair with her and then gave into her desires. Did you know it's a true story? Carl Jung, had an affair with a woman that he treated. As far as seeing him beat her with a belt...well, I thought it was a bit much and overdone. Maybe I was just shocked.

Michael I am pretty sure that they are going to make this a movie. Usually when a book gets this praise, it is bound to become a movie. As far as the content, I am sure that they are going to have nude scenes but it probably won't be as explicit as the book. I think it depends on many factors, I don't see them including every sex scene but it may include some things.

message 26: by Siobhan (last edited Feb 09, 2013 07:00AM) (new) - rated it 1 star

Siobhan How are they going to make it a movie? Soft lighting, lots of veils, and camera shots that almost but don't quite show everything. Suggestive music and piss-poor dialogue.

Rachel I can honestly say that when I heard that Fifty shades of grey was going to be made into a movie, I was horrified. I don't mean that I didn't like it but it was just the idea of it in a movie!! For god's sake the book is most about kinky f-ed up sex! I love the love story but I don't think it was going to enough to get it onto a big screen without people going "What the hell did I just watch" I personally love the book mostly because of the romance but truth be told, I don't think I would go see it in cinemas without probably having a heart attack.

Nichole I think it'll be easy. Despite the repetitiveness and slightly bad editing within the book, I felt it had a good psychological storyline between two totally different people, and the story was actual vivid enough. Not just from the sex scenes, b/c half of them weren't even that well written, but in general, to the whole story. Granted, I think they could play it smart and put all three books in ONE movie though. Obviously, it'd then become a simple girl meets boy story with a happy ending and their own baggage in the middle. That will minimize the sex scenes they show and any other mundane crap from the books.

Reymart Dinglasa you're all gonna watch it anyway. word.

NC-17 is the kiss of death for films! They never make any money, which for production companies, is the worst thing ever.

Anyway, if you want BDSM sex with a beautiful love story, Secretary (2002; Spader, Gyllenhaal) is a much better film.

Melodie I'm sure they will find a way for the movie ... What I'm really wondering is how old the audience is going to be ... I'm sure there are 12-13 year old teenagers who will want to watch this movie and for that I'm not sure ....

Mrs Jade Kyle Grey Cross Clark Maddox Stark Ward Hamilton As much as I would love it as a movie I almost don't want them to as for me if they choose the wrong actor/actress I feel it would wreck the book a bit - the images in my head may be better than what's in the movie lol ;)

message 35: by Mochaspresso (last edited Feb 10, 2013 07:18AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mochaspresso I'm pretty sure that they will not stay true to the book. They have to change it. First, it won't make as much money as a NC-17 film. That rating may even limit which theaters it would even get shown in. If they stay true to the book, Christian will look like a sex addicted psycho and Ana will look like a brainless ninny. (...which is what I actually thought of both of them as I was reading.) I loved FSOG, but even I realize that it doesn't translate well to film as it is.

Sharanja I don't know how they're going to film certain scenes in this movie. Some things should just never be filmed, in my opinion. Also, I wonder how it's going to be played in theaters? It has to at least get an R rated or NC-17 rating. I mean, this is porn we're talking about basically. It'll probably open the doors for future porn films who want to get wide theater releases.

Caroline Easton I love this trilogy, but I must admit I am worried about how it will cross over to film.

Just hope they don't concentrate on the sex scenes, they need to concentrate on the romance of the story. Honestly speaking they aren't the best sex scenes I have ever read, I thought them quite tame, not living up to the hype at all. But they are still one of the best romance books I have read in a long time. Ones I will return to again and again.

Michael They are probably going to cut out most sex scenes and highlight other things. However I don't see how they are going to ignore it, most of the scenes were mainly sex. Unless it lessens in the other sequels.

I only read this one though.

Darbhina i hope they will just focus on christian and ana's "more"....

Siobhan Bevin wrote: "Kaila wrote: "i enjoy the books but not excited about a movie.. i heard they are looking at doing it nc-17 to be able to get all the sex in there. i just think they wont capture the love in the boo..."

I love the secretary. 50 was completely missing Ana in her wedding dress wetting herself because Christian told her to stay in her seat and not move.

Stephanie There is already an unauthorized porn of this, and the movie studio is suing the porn studio for it. I'm sure they can gloss over some of the sex, maybe make it like The Secretary with James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhal. It might even improve the plot because the book itself reads like it was written by a thirteen year old. The inner goddess will probably get cut. Hey! It might actually be good!

message 42: by Currer (new)

Currer Jean Hopefully with an R rating.

Courtney Can't see this book being anything but a raunchy hardcore porn movie. Let's pray they don't try to make this into a movie, it was bad enough as a book.

Michael Brittany wrote: "Hopefully with an R rating."

Rated R? More like X Rated, this book was clearly porn in some scenes lol.

Tamsyn I'm wondering why they should do the movie at all at this point. The bubble has burst IMO. If it doesn't come out this summer, they shouldn't even bother. We've all moved on to other books and if y'all are like me, 50 has been trumped! True, 50 got me reading books non-stop again, which I haven't even cracked open a book since Box Car Children in elementary school. I'd like to see Gabriel's Inferno/Rapture turned into a movie. The Edge of Never would make a good summer movie as well for the young adult crowd. I truly don't know how 50 will work on screen unless they lump all three into one movie, but I'm tellin' ya, it won't work at all if they don't get to it!
