Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'd be re-reading it anyway, but YES.

Aaron Cassese (acassese) I just read an article that says it will be released in January so its got me really excited! Plus I haven't read in at least fifteen years so it will be nice to revisit it before the sequel comes out!

Kathryn (kcanty313) | 747 comments I will be reading it next week for the first time. Hopefully, it's late enough in the year so I will remember everything for the new book.

message 5: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 219 comments Thanks for the update! Its going to be a huge bestseller.

message 6: by Alondra (new)

Alondra Miller no, already reread it and know it intimately.. :D

Me too, but I re-read it every year (except this one, since I'm doing this torturous re-reading ban *sob*).. I can't wait for January. :D

message 8: by Chris (new)

Chris (cbrunner11) | 119 comments I will be reading it for the first time closer to fall so it is fresh in my mind when Dr Sleep comes out. I can't wait, putting it off till fall sees tough but I have been told it is a better fall/Halloween read. I of course know the movies very very well but this should be even better.

message 9: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) It's best when read when there's lots of snow on the ground... Which is why I usually read it in January. ;)

I read that you mentioned that in our group nominations last month I think so I have put it off till then. However, since Dr Sleep comes out in January I want to have the shinning read first. So excited :-). I figured it would make a good Halloween read for me, hopefully there will at least be a chill in the air.

message 11: by Aaron (new)

Aaron Cassese (acassese) Yeah I will probably hold off until a week or so before Dr.Sleep is released!

message 12: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I can't fault that logic... Let's just hope that Dr. Sleep isn't set in the summer! O_o

Seed | 20 comments Haven't read it yet...it's on the list.

message 14: by Marnie (last edited Aug 05, 2012 12:43AM) (new)

Marnie (Enchanted Bibliophile) (enchantedbibliophile) Think I will read it in my December Holiday! Then every thing will be fresh in my mind, come January!

message 15: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 293 comments I plan on re-reading it sometime before Doctor Sleep comes out.

Phil Baker (Moonshae_D) | 6 comments Yes. Yes I will.

message 17: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (veraj121) | 300 comments Since Dr.Sleep is the sequel to The Shining and I want to start the new year off with the latest Stephen King book, I intend to re-read it. I only read The Shining once back in High School (late 80's). So, I need to revisit anyway.

I probably won't re-read, but that's only because I re-read it last year and still remember it pretty well.

Dustin Kathryn wrote: "I will be reading it next week for the first time. Hopefully, it's late enough in the year so I will remember everything for the new book."

I cannot wait to hear your thoughts on it, Kathryn!:)

As for me, of course I'll be re-reading The Shining in preparation for Dr. Sleep!

message 21: by Kevin (last edited Aug 05, 2012 11:34AM) (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 219 comments I might reread The Shining around Christmas time. It will be the first reread of the book I've done since I first picked it up over 10 years ago. It was the first book I even bought at a library. I got it for $0.05.

message 22: by Kit★ (new)

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments I just re-read it not that long ago, maybe about a year and a half ago... dunno if I'll give it another go or not, I'll probably wait until it's closer to the release of Dr. Sleep to make up my mind.

Bondama (kerensa) | 868 comments I completely agree with Becky on re-reading "The Shining"- Heck, I'd could be talked into re-reading a King book I just finished 10 minutes ago!!

message 25: by Natalie (new)

Natalie | 4 comments Of course I will re-read it. I'm doing it every year;)

message 26: by Stefan (new)

Stefan Yates (stefan31) | 117 comments Nah, I'll just watch the movie before I read Dr. Sleep. ;)

All kidding aside, I have re-read it fairly recently and need to continue on my chronological challenge, so I'll most probably just read Dr. Sleep without any prep work.

message 27: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Bieber | 22 comments When I was in Germany recently I bought "Shining" (in German) in a bookstore in Munich. I might try struggling through it and improve my German, or I might give it up and reread The Shining in English so I don't have to wait forever before reading Dr. Sleep :) So either way I'll reread it in some language.

message 28: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Hmm, I'm curious.. since there's been talk of re-reading The Shining, I wonder how relevant those events will be for Dr. Sleep. I mean, I have no doubt said Overlook events impacted Danny in some very profound ways (and I'm really looking forward to seeing the specifics of his present charter,) but it all just has me curious, that's all...

I'm not complaining or anything..:)

message 29: by Kelli (new)

Kelli (manxkitti) | 52 comments I'm going to have to re read The Shining before I get Dr. Sleep.

message 30: by Stefan (last edited Aug 07, 2012 11:16AM) (new)

Stefan Yates (stefan31) | 117 comments I just noticed that excluding the Dark Tower series, Stephen King has only written two true sequels: Black House and Dr. Sleep. In both of them he has taken a child character from the first and written the sequel about that character as an adult. Don't know why, but this struck me as a bit odd.

message 31: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 293 comments I'm assuming Doctor Sleep will be to The Shining what Black House was to The Talisman - that is, same main character, totally independent story line.

That could be true, Courtney.:) We shall see!

Valerie Zink | 30 comments Yup. I heard Dr. Sleep was coming out, but Amazon has no record of it....

message 34: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 219 comments I found out its coming out on Jan 15th 2013.

message 35: by An (new)

An I will absolutely reread it, has been about twelve years since I read it...

Really, Valerie? That's weird!

message 37: by Luis (new)

Luis | 18 comments I won't re-read it because I read the book for the first time just over a year go so it's still somewhat fresh in my mind. Also, I'm not in the habit of re-reading books with some exceptions.
Stephen King has said that the book is about the adult Danny Torrance (the kid in The Shining) so it doesn't pick up immediately after The Shining but decades later so Dr. Sleep could almost be a stand alone book.

message 38: by Catherine (new)

Catherine (yarnmama10) | 89 comments Hmm, not sure. I have read it a couple of times and feel like I remember it pretty well but it has been quite a few years. I may re-read but I will wait until December or early January if I do.

It sounds more of a stand-alone story to me, as well.

Valerie Zink | 30 comments Dustin wrote: "Valerie the bookworm wrote: "Yup. I heard Dr. Sleep was coming out, but Amazon has no record of it...."

Really, Valerie? That's weird!"

Yup. You do a search and it comes up with other novels related to sleep...you would think if it was coming out as soon as January, it would be up there for pre-order. I read on the Stephen King website that he has pulled it for more editing and the earliest date now might be April...I think that is what I saw!

Courtney | 293 comments http://www.amazon.ca/Doctor-Sleep-Ste...

It's Doctor Sleep, not Dr. Sleep. That's why you've been having trouble finding it.

message 42: by Stefan (new)

Stefan Yates (stefan31) | 117 comments It's on the Canadian Amazon, but not the US version.

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

I will definitely be reading the sequel. I'm rereading The Shining at the moment. It's my favorite King novel.

Chris (cbrunner11) | 119 comments So has everyone seen Doctor Sleep is now not coming out till September 2013? I'm so bummed. I was so excited to use some Christmas money on the new book. That money will be long spent by the time Dr. Sleep comes out now.

The only good thing about the Kubrick/Nicholson/Duvall movie was that it gave me a super surprise, as it changed the ending - and I was very disappointed by the change - although it certainly gave me a start!

I have not heard about Dr. Sleep. Will someone please tell me where I can read about it as it relates to The Shining? BTW, I reread the full version of The Stand every year. I have read The Shining a few times as well, but not in some time. I always smile when I think about it - not just because it is such an enjoyable/scary read, but also because my husband can no longer see a "hedge animal" without shuddering and running in the opposite direction! Since you have not read it, I don't believe that little reference is a *spoiler.* If anyone does, please let me know and I will indicate that as a correction.

You should just be able to google it or go to King's webpage to find information.
