message 108: by Julius, He Who Arises in Might (:D) (new)

Julius (bookseeker007) | 1781 comments Mod
Whoa! You've lost me, sir. I don't speak Gaelic, I was merely hazarding a guess. :P I've always liked the sound of Gaelic, though, but I'm told it's very complicated. You seem very fluent.

Sometimes I mix them up lol! I am afraid I will loose my fluency in french and gaelic as I no long have anyone to speak it with. I was able to speak a bit when my wife and I went to Cuba for our 15th anniversary. There were a lot of folks from Quebec there. It was nice to be able to carry on a conversation in french for a change.

message 110: by Daniel (new)

Daniel McMillan (nerdtek) | 27 comments @Julius lol here's the pronunciation (or at least how I pronounce it lol) and then the translation:
Hah-low shuh mishuh Dow-nall. Cay-mar a ha shiv? A veil gah-lic ah-gav?
Hello my name is Daniel. How are you? Do you speak gaelic?

The last phrase literally means "Do you have gaelic?"

message 111: by Daniel (new)

Daniel McMillan (nerdtek) | 27 comments Let's see french..."Allo je m'appelle Daniel. Comment êtes-vous? Parlez-vous français?
Not sure I know this in german..let's see
Hallo, mein Name ist Daniel. Wie geht es Ihnen? Sphrechen Sie Deutsche?
lol I think I'll stop there.

Wonderful. One of the tricky things with Gaelic to me is the tricky pronunciation! But I like the way it flows.

message 116: by Daniel (new)

Daniel McMillan (nerdtek) | 27 comments Like spanish though it's very phonetic without many exceptions. So once you know the pronunciation rules it's very easy to read.

message 117: by Daniel (new)

Buon giorno, Il mio nome è Daniel. Come sta? Parla Italiano?

Very close to spanish.

In case you're curious latin is

Is it a language you got to use often?

message 119: by Daniel (new)

Daniel McMillan (nerdtek) | 27 comments Not as much as I would like these days. All the family members that used to speak it are passed away. I need to find a group of local people who speak it and hang out, or teach any interested parties in my generation as well as my children.

message 141: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Priester (jenniferpriester) Besides English, I speak D level Spanish, and a few words of Japenese. Not too much else as far as human languages go. I can understand cat and dog body language though and am pretty good at this. I am also learning to understand some horse. I have owned rabbits most of my life and still understand almost nothing.

*Scrstches chin thoughtfully* You know, you're probably the first person here to mention body language. That's pretty cool. I couldn't learn Spannish even if I tried, though the language sounds deeply passionate.

I was lucky to just pass Spanish. I actually only took a class in it because my older sister had and she made learning it look so easy.

The animal body language, on the other hand, has been very easy for me to learn, and as I find myself writing many stories from the point of view of animals it helps make them more realistic. Most of my cat and dog body language was learned through observation and Animal Planet shows. I am learning horse because my current riding instructor is actually an expert at interpreting horse body language. The horse I currently ride at first had come across to people as lazy and he also sometimes bucked when a crop was used on him. When this instructor got hired to the barn and learned about Levi she wanted to try him out, because she is also a horse trainer. She discovered that while everyone was trying to ride him English, Levi had been trained Western, which are very different riding styles. She also learned that he bucked only when the crop was used because he didn't understand what it meant, he was used to spurs and had never had a crop used on him before. It was frustrated energy that led to the buck. Now Levi is quickly becoming one of the best horses at the barn. So far all I have really learned with horse behavior is how to tell based on body language when he is happy and undertanding what I want him to do and how to tell if he is being lazy or not understanding.

The Japanese I learn as needed. Sometimes I learn some words from reading Manga or watching Anime shows. Chibi was one such word. I learned this one from the Manga of Dragon Drive. Because Chibi was the name of the little dragon in dragon drive, as well as part of the name for the wolf pup in the video game of Okamiden, and I really liked both characters, I named one of my two rabbits, Chibi. Then becasue Chibi was Japenese and I had two rabbits to name I thought the other probably should be Japanese as well to match. I decided to name the other rabbit based on the way the cats get their warrior names in the Warriors books. I eventually decided on the word Fawn to describe the color of her brown spots then just began coming up with different things for the other part and seeing what the word would be in Japanese and if it would flow with the word Fawn. Eventually, I can't remember which one I actually asked for, whether it was the word Heart or Spirit, as both are the same word, but I found this to be a good fit and the name of Kojikaki was chosen for rabbit number two.

The study of body languages sounds really amazing, because you can sometimes tell more from the body language than you can ever from words or the sounds of animals. Needless to say, it's also, albeit, a bit more fluent than the human languages. I learnt some Japanese also from anime. It is ironic that we pick up on some of which we watch unintentionally, is
It not? Anyway, Kojikaki is a really nice name. That was clever thinking to pick up on that.

Learning without meaning to does happen to be how I learn best, and are the things I always remember. It's always funny to think about how things I learn this way I can actually remember exactly how and where I did, but anything that came from research books or school would be gone as soon as I was no longer required to remember.

Hey! That sounds like me and learning the periodic table! I pay attention, then once I hit the front door of my home it's complete mind blank. Then again, I can't even recall what I had for lunch today- and lunch is closer to dinner than breakfast!!

Very few people still practice it, unfortunately. I remember trying to gleam a sense of understanding through my mum's body language when she said my birthday present would be a surprise. Ahh. How easy it is to miss important body language...

Blood Bone and Muscle My 'langue natale' (mother tongue) is French but I speak a spec of Russian as I carry those dictionaries with me almost everywhere (any tips on the case system?).

If I carry the dictionary, it does not mean I speak the Portuguese/Latvian/Estonian/Italian/Spanish/Lithuanian/Mandarin/Conversational Japanese, I just like doing the tourist thing everywhere I go to feel a little less ignorant every day. ^^'
