Robin | 142 comments I had this problem in Game of Thrones, I said to my self that I'd read the full series, but I really couldn't stick with it.

Yeah. I like GoT. But later books, I ended up skipping chapters and just reading the characters I liked.

message 4853: by Robin (new)

Robin | 142 comments I was so tempted to do that. But I knew if I did that then I wouldn't get the full plot. As I'd only be reading one or two characters.

message 4854: by Robin (new)

Robin | 142 comments I'm like that. I've been told to just concentrate on one book at a time. Usually though I'm reading between five and seven books at the same time.

message 4855: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments I usually have a living room book, a bedroom book and a take with me to read while I'm out book at least.

message 4856: by Robin (new)

Robin | 142 comments Hey Mike do you have a book for every single room of your house LOL.

message 4857: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments No..I generally only spend time in 3 rooms where I have time to read. The bathroom book is also usually the "take with me" book....

:)

message 4859: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Oh, come on... It's just reality. I've heard people refer to the bathroom as the "reading room".

message 4860: by Robin (new)

Robin | 142 comments More often than not My family finds me reading in either my bed room or I'm in the conservatory.

message 4861: by N.P. (new)

N.P. (neilgr) My office tends to be my reading room at the moment as I'm always at work but that can get a bit awkward when my boss comes in and finds me reading American Gods for the umpteenth time that day (seriously, it's taking me forever to get through.)

That having been said, I'm starting to develop the hearing of a bat now so can hear him coming from about 50 paces away :)

David Buchan | 4 comments Hi, I'm David. New to Goodreads but not Sci-Fi & Fantasy, which have obsessed me for decades. I look forward to finding new authors to read from your reviews etc. I'm finding the seer number of Goodreads groups confusing/daunting. I'd be grateful for recommendations of any other good SFF groups to join.
Thanks

I'm slowly working my way around GRs too, you're not alone.

I will. The most surprising thing so far is how little overlap 'compare books' shows up between my collection and anyone else I've tried.

message 4867: by Robin (new)

Robin | 142 comments Welcome to both John and david. David as a recent GR joinee myself I know how you feel. I'm glad that I'm finally figuring everything out. Hey john glad to have you in the group. I'll have a look at your stuff in a sec. If I find that I'm interested in your books, don't be surprised to get a friend request.

message 4868: by Orrin (new)

Orrin Bradford (bswift21) | 6 comments Hello,

I also joined some time ago but don't think I introduced myself until now.

I became an avid reader of fantasy and science fiction as an eleven-year-old boy when my next-door neighbor, who was a children's librarian, took pity on my single-parent mom. Bored out of my gourd with no one to play with but good 'ol mom, I drove her crazy until Mrs. Crabtree brought home a stack of books she knew would hook a young boy and give my mom some relief. It worked. I've been hooked ever since.

Becoming a successful author of visionary fiction and non-fiction is my third and probably last career, what I'm calling my Encore Performance. First one was as a small animal vet, and second was/is as a Life On Purpose Coach.

I sold my veterinary practice in the late 80's to pursue a career as a freelance writer and life coach, all the while maintaining my love for SF and Fantasy, reading, writing, and reviewing it. Great to be a part of this GR group.

Nick Mazmanian | 3 comments Hello everyone!

I am a writer who loves monsters, mysteries, and all the wondrous things that life can afford! I enjoy a great amount of fiction and non-fiction as well as woodworking and sunken ships.

My facial hair changes with the seasons, but my mustache remains eternal. Cannot wait to read through the comments on this forum!

message 4871: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments ...I always wear my chin whiskers and mustache! I think I may be from the evil Star Trek universe?????

Hi, welcome.

I do leather work and find that sunken ships are difficult to reach...

message 4872: by Nick (new)

Nick Mazmanian | 3 comments If you build a leather boat, perhaps it would be a bit impossible; but if you pay off a sea turtle for a lift it's a breeze really.

message 4873: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments I don't know...I've read that early Irish made it to North America in leather boats.

I generally stick with smaller projects however.

L.E. Watson Hi, my name is Louisa, I’m 30 years old and I live in the UK. I work for a local magazine, enjoy visiting National Trust gardens and have also taken a history degree with the Open University, but aside from that I mostly stay at home with my books.

I’ve only recently discovered Goodreads, and this is the first group I’ve joined. Fantasy is my favourite genre, but I also like reading history books and the occasional work of historical fiction. Maybe I’ll start reading more sci-fi books now I’ve joined this group...

It’s hard to remember all the books I’ve read this year, but the main ones which stand out are the Mage books by Karen Miller (‘The Innocent Mage’, ‘The Awakened Mage’ etc). I was rather bored by the opening chapters of the first book, then became caught up in the story and read all the way to ‘A Blight of Mages’, which was so bad it made me want to tear my hair out. Anyway, right now I’m reading the Trylle Trilogy by Amanda Hocking.

J.E. Mac (jamesmccormick) | 14 comments Re-introduce myself?

My Goodreads author page just got uploaded. Just checking out how it works. Seems to have retroactively changed every thing.

Use to be "James McCormick." I've been transmuted to J.E. (might have to fix that)... probably should change it to J.E. Mac considering I saw another J.E. that posts around here.

Anyway, I'm looking for SciFi stuff to read that's in the vein of Dresden Files. Weird, right? What is the Urban Fantasy of the SciFi world?

message 4878: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Well....the Garrett Files series by Glen Cook might fill the bill somewhat.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Robin, that's a tricky answer. I only picked up one of the books and it was basically soft core porn. I'm told that the series opened as a pretty straight forward urban fantasy and over a few volumes became...more visceral...sexy...porny.

:)

Anyway, maybe someone who's read more of them will chime in, I didn't follow the series, LOL.

I was wondering whether to bother investing my time in the series, the idea and concept behind the books seems interesting though. But if it's just people having sex every other page, then I would leave it alone.

Me too. I have to work up to that kind of stamina :p

message 4886: by Robin (new)

Robin | 142 comments Apparently the first five or so books in the Anita Blake series were halfway decent. I've just looked at all the tropes present in the series, it's kind of funny how much the series gets slated.

Now that's an interesting item! One of the reasons I like Goodreads is that you occasionally discover interesting snippets about people whose names appear on here regularly.
And the reason I find that interesting? Look here and search the page for the name "Cormell". I tried to get on a course myself this summer, but the dates didn't fit - it will have to be next year.

D.M. Baillie (dmbaillie) | 1 comments Hi All, I'm just new to the group and still trying to get used to all the different discussion threads on here.

What to say about my reading tastes, well I like everything sci-fi and fantasy, pretty good excuse for joining this group I would think. I recently finished the Game of Thrones series (well all the ones that are released) and loved every bit of them. Love the way no character is safe.

Also now reading the Sookie Stackhouse series, chosen purely because I loved the TV show. Current book is Dead to the World. Loved the books so far, lets hope the rest are as good.

I'm also a goodreads author but I'm not here to advertise, just to be a fan of great sci-fi and fantasy fiction.

Hopefully catch up with you all out there on the boards...

Robin | 142 comments Apologies in advance everybody but I'm about to go on a rant. OH MY GOD I can't believe how much paper work you have to fill out when your applying for Cambridge. I swear none of the other universities I've applied to wants me to die of boredom disorder. I imagine I'll do more writing before I actually get to the interview part of the application than the whole time I could potentially spend at Cambridge. I'll need to get the irritation out of my system so I'll probably post this in multiple groups. Apologies once again.

Very nice to meet you, D.M. I'm new and finding lots of very nice people here, with great ideas for new books for me.

Hope to talk more about being an author and still trying to have a life!

Those are some more authors I need to look up, thanks!
Any kind of book/stories you're looking for at the moment?

Rick Kirby Hi Gary. Im sure you will enjoy them, i know i did! Thanks for the warm welcome.
im looking for similar kinds of books to those i have read really. Good, lighthearted fantasy with a purpose. Not a fan of overly long, complicated, drawn out stories like grrm tbh. Reminds me of a fantasy soap opera! Not to say it isnt well written of course, just not my bag.

im also doing a bit of writing in my spare time, nothing close to finishing yet though, so admin have nothing to fear from me with regards to plugging!

Excellent. I tend to enjoy the more 'traditional' length novels as well. Around 200-300 pages is perfect. The shift to epic sized novels as the norm put me off a lot of books.I prefer authors like Ian Fleming and Heinlein's shorts.

More and I lose interest in most (not all!). Less is OK because I really do like novelettes and short stories.

When I write, it's 200/300 page stories, usually fast/nice paced stories with enough character building to be interesting but without the family history of the last millennium.

Looking forward to more chats.

Gary

Hi everyone! Like Orrin, I'm also a veterinarian by training, though unlike you, Orrin, I'm still in practice, though part-time now. I'm a longtime member of this group but I've been inactive for awhile. I felt it was time to return.

I'm also a published sci-fi/fantasy author, but you all can learn more about that by looking at my Goodreads author page. I'll say no more about it here.

I'm currently reading On Basilisk Station by David Weber. I'm not normally a fan of military sci-fi, but I saw Mr. Weber at a convention a few months ago and since I love stories with strong female leads, I decided to give it a try. So far, despite all the technical descriptions of the military hardware, I'm enjoying the human aspects of the story.
