Sanderson. Good choice! Welcome, by the way. Have you read the Mistborn series?

The first book. The other two are in my to-read list. I will most likely read the second book after I finish Deadhouse Gates.

Have you got a treat in store for you! The first book, as you know, is the classic fantasy, where the little people defeat the god-like villain. The next two concern what happens after the victory is won. Sanderson is brilliant, not so much because of his use of language, but his concepts are unexpected and out of the ordinary. Have a great time with that!

So I have heard. Really looking forward to that!

But more importantly! During that year and a half I decided not to do a whole lot of reading (for fear my style might subconsciously change) so I'm a bit behind on current books! I love sci-fi and fantasy. My first great love was The Hobbit and subsequent Lord of the Rings trilogy. But I'm also a sucker for a good (read: well done) romance! The paranormal/sci fi romance genre is a bit niche, but I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations in that sub genre? Such as romances between aliens and humans, or well done space opera romances, etc.
I kind of like the romance to be prominent but not completely drive the story-- I'd want some good action/story development/suspense thrown in there too!
And, of course, feel free to email me at authorjasonlee.com for correspondence, too! Otherwise I'll be hopping in from time to time just to see how everyone's doing! Thanks!

My favorite authors & their books include:
Ray Bradbury- Fahrenheit 451
Isaac Asimov- Foundation Series
Douglas Adams- Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Jim Butcher- The Harry Dresden Series
J.K. Rowling- Harry Potter books
Currently I am reading Allegiant by Veronica Roth. I look forward to joining in on discussions and exploring new authors and titles in my favorite genres!

I was giving it some thought after reading your post, but I'm not quite sure what sucked me into the transition between fantasy and sci-fi! I loved stories of historical fiction like Scarlet Letter and The Scarlet Pimpernel, and (somewhat) dystopian stories like The Giver (man that book brings back memories) but I can't really think of a single science fiction title that I read that actually bridged my love for fantasy with a love for scifi.
Which is very strange considering that my biggest inspiration for writing is usually science fiction rather than fantasy.
Perhaps it stemmed from film more than books?
I hear a lot about Isaac Asimov though I've never had the pleasure of reading any of his work. Same with Kurt Vonnegut. What's so good about the foundation series that makes it your favorite by Asimov? I'd love to check out some of these titles. Now that I've finished writing my first scifi series I'm eager to get back into some reading. It's like I've gone through withdrawals!
Hope to hear from you!
Welcome, Amanda. There are plenty of good times and good conversations to be had here. Dive in and claim your share!

Hello Jason, thank you for the welcome! I happened to read Asimov on a whim and a suggestion from a random person. I have to say I really love Prelude to Foundation and Forward the Foundation because they are Asimov's later contribution to the Foundation series. The original 3 books of the Foundation series (All written in the 50s) are more of what you could consider "classic" sci-fi. It draws a parallel to the world at that time, and really would have made the reader think about the state of things. However, on a negative side the older books are a little dry to me because they lack a focus on personal relationships, which I happen to enjoy. His later works, Prelude and Forward have the personal relationships that the others lack. In those two books are some of my favorite characters. Also, I feel like they draw parallels to the world today and issues that are still very much relevant to our lives (like most sci-fi stories usually do). I still need to read Foundation's Edge and Foundation and Earth. Asimov in general is a great Sci-Fi author. I, Robot is great and so are many of his short stories. So that's why I consider Asimov one of my favorite authors. He really makes you think about things and that is always exciting to me in a book.

Hello, Claire, and welcome. Fantasy is a fun genre. I used to play in it before I found my own calling. By all means, learn your favorite field inside and out, but don't be afraid to take a little side trip now and again. You never know where that might lead you.

I've just started taking my first few tentative step in writing too, though I won't lie, I've got a long way to go before I publish anything :D
I'm really looking forward to hearing about all the great books everyone is reading.

It's my first time here. My name is James Kirk Bisceglia. I have a wonderful wife and a lovely daughter.
I've worked for the government for twenty years, and it became so mundane and boring I finally had to express myself in another way, so I wrote a book.
Reading is something I've always enjoyed and I read a variety of books. Some of my favorites include "The Hunt for Red October", "The Godfather", and any good science fiction book.
I hope to become a valued member of the group. It's nice to meet you all!

I mostly read Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror, but have read most books that are considered classics and am always looking for anything that is well written. Mostly what I look for in novels is something that is stimulating, different, and engaging.

My main genre is fantasy, growing up with authors such as R.E Feist, David Eddings, David Gemmell and Terry Brooks to name a few. I also read some sci-fi and horror when I fancy something different.
I am hoping to get back into reading more again using Goodreads and the group to help give me more ideas of what to read next.

I am Trevor Williams, 31, currently in the USA. I've always loved reading growing up, as well as writing stories - my earliest story was inspired by a horror movie that I saw when I was just seven - "The Blob".
In high school, I wrote a lot of poetry and short stories, alongside my running my first (and only) Dungeons & Dragons campaign, which spanned nearly two years. During college, I dabbled a bit in journalism, but found more joy in being a DJ for the local radio station.
Today, I'm working full-time writing code and generally keeping the back-end of the nonprofit I work for up and running - work I really enjoy. Alongside that, I've been speaking at various nonprofit events concerning Salesforce and its benefits for nonprofits, which has been generating quite the snowball effect in terms of opportunities.
I would love to publish a work of fiction one day, but in the meantime, I've been busy working on some fan fiction that's dominated some blocks of time in my life alongside my friends and family. I've decided to post my story here on Goodreads to get it greater exposure and to learn more from all of you!

Currently, I'm chewing my way through the Vampire Hunter D series, though I must admit I can't wait to get to some of the book's on your list.
Here's looking forward to many interesting discussions in the future.
Thanks in advance,

My first book "The Time Manipulator's Son" is a science fiction/fantasy novel for pre-teens to young adults and brings alive new and original concepts. One appealing aspect I will share with you now is a transportation device called a "floater board" used by young people. How does it work? That is quite interesting!

Please ask as many questions as you want.

Frankenstein by Marry Shelly
I am Legend by Richard Mathewson
The Time Machine by H.G. Wells
Adaptation by Malinda Lo
The first three K-Pax books (still to read 4 and 5) by Gene Brewer
I love character driven stories if you have any recommendations that fit that please say.

Can't really agree with your feelings that no other fantasy compares to HP...Most of us here will probably be happy to recommend some contenders.

Well I'm always open to suggestions. I love character driven books. The best non HP fantasy I have read resentfully is Ash by Malinda Lo, hm or maybe the Drowning Girl by Caitlín R. Kiernan but I'm not sure that counts as fantasy. :)

I'm Dave and I'm this old. (cue visual of me pointing at hairline) I'm an avid reader and burn through books quite rapidly. I'll read just about anything but really enjoy mysteries and sci fi.
When not reading I teach GED classes, ride motorcycles, and fly model airplanes.

So do I. Some writers, like Tanya Huff, Lois McMaster Bujold, Patricia A. McKillip, and C. Dale Brittain are very good.
Unfortunately the current business model sort of emphasizes plots over characters, so finding decent books with decent characters is hard. A lot of authors can't tell the difference between character and characterization. Characterization serves the plot. A good character makes the plot (and the author, alas) serve them.

Welcome, Karlton! Sounds a lot like my early history. Of course, I'm a steampunker now. Sort of alternate history sci-fi. Anyway, hope you have a long and happy stay here.

I agree, it's a rush, but it isn't unique by a long shot. Abney Park, the world's premiere steampunk band, has not only novels based on their music, but an RPG and a boardgame. Media gets more and more cross-pollinated, and we are the beneficiaries.
