Lee Harry Potter gets better. The first few are definitely geared towards younger children.

Jim Vuksic Hi! I'm Jim Vuksic; I am 66 years old and have surmised from a quick glance at the membership introductions that I am probably now the oldest member. However, my adult children and grandchildren insist that I have yet to grow up; so, in some ways at least, I may be younger than many of you.

I have an eclectic taste in reading as the "Books Read" section of my profile will reveal. It does include a number of science fiction books.

I have been retired for the past 12 years; so I now have time to do all the things I never had time to do before; like reading, reading, and more reading.

'The Century' (non-fiction) by Peter Jennings & Todd Brewster. - 'The War' (An Intimate History 1941 - 1945) by Geoffrey C. Ward & Ken Burns) - 'The Inverted World' (sci-fi) by Christopher Priest.

S.J. Pajonas (spajonas) | 7 comments Hi everyone!

Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Stephanie and a long-time reader of science fiction. I grew up on Asimov, Clarke, Herbert, and Heinlein and still love them to this day. I'm also an author and will post about my book in the Author's section.

I hope to get a lot out of this group though as a reader! I'm always looking for new, astounding scifi to read. It'll be interesting to see the recommendations come out of this group.

Thanks for having me!

Jim Vuksic Welcome S.J.,

Any friend of Misters Clark, Herbert, and Heinlein is a friend of mine.

message 3908: by David (new)

David | 14 comments Welcome Lori. Welcome, Thomas. I've been away for a while, but it's nice to welcome new members to the group.

message 3909: by David (new)

David | 14 comments Hello. SJ. Welcome. Can't go wrong with Asimov, Heinlein and Herbert. Some of my favorite authors when I got into sci-fi/fantasy.

message 3910: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Bell | 2 comments Hi Everyone!

I'm Elizabeth and I'm a huge Sci-Fi and Fantasy fan. I've read authors from Mikhail Bulgakov to Laurell K. Hamilton. I'm always on the hunt for new authors, so I hope to see you all around!

message 3911: by Joshua (new)

Joshua Steelman (js_novels) | 2 comments Hi, I'm Josh. From the moment I was introduced to the book, "Magician: Apprentice," I was hooked on the fantasy genre. That genre holds the most promise for me as a reader and a writer. I love it. I really do even though there aren't that many great fantasy novels out there, which is a real shame. That dearth is what drives me to create. Well, that and the desperate need to express myself. Sorry if this reads like an advertisement. That's not my intent at all. Writing is just a major part of my life: it means everything to me.

Welcome, Joshua.

From what I gather from your introduction, "The Stolen Child" by Keith Donohue is a fantasy novel you might find truly fascinating.
Published in 2006, it is Mr. Donohue's first novel and became a national bestseller.

message 3913: by Kitty G Books (new)

Kitty G Books (kool_kat_kitty) Hi, I'm Kaitlin and I adore fantasy, in particular I love George R R Martin, Joe Abercrombie, Brandon Sanderson and many many more. Excited to start reading as a group and I hope I find some new interesting recommendations here!

message 3914: by Joshua (new)

Joshua Steelman (js_novels) | 2 comments Thanks for the recommendation, Jim! It sounds right up my alley. I just put it on my Amazon wishlist. Thanks!

Welcome, Kaitlin.

You have good taste in authors.
Now that HBO's TV series, "Game of Thrones", has become an international sensation, I wonder how many readers will become big fans of Mr. Martin's "A Song of Fire and Ice" fantasy series?

message 3916: by Kitty G Books (new)

Kitty G Books (kool_kat_kitty) That's very true Jim, I actually watched the first few episodes of season 1 and then became convinced I needed to read the entire series so I did that as fast as I could and I finished the latest book 'A Dance with Dragons' in jan of this year. I've also just purchased the 'Dangerous Women' anthology which has a novella set in the SOIAF world and I cannot wait to read it all as it has a load of wonderful authors contributing to it! :)

message 3917: by Jim (last edited Dec 17, 2013 08:04PM) (new)

Jim Vuksic Welcome, Gwen.

Nothing wrong with fantasy novels; just so long as one of them is "Game of Thrones".

message 3918: by Trike (new)

Trike Welcome to all the new kids. Jump in.

message 3919: by Christopher (new)

Christopher (nerdthatlifts) Name's Chris, I'm an attorney with the U.S. Army currently stationed in Hawaii with two awesome little boys (6 and 2). I'm a history fan and my guilty pleasures are spaceships and dragons.

I keep a giant spreadsheet with all the books I own and read and am SLOWLY transporting that data onto Goodreads.

Favorite authors are probably Gene Wolfe and Dan Simmons. Though Brandon Sanderson always puts out quality stuff and I'm perennially intimidated by Steven Erikson and Malazan.

message 3920: by Jim (new)

Jim Vuksic Welcome, Chris; and thank you for your sevice to our country.

message 3921: by Dan (new)

Dan Needles (danneedles) | 2 comments I'm Dan and came off a 8 year or so hiatus after healing my terminal wife and son of autism (a whole 'nother story.) Anyway I have actual recreation time and hope to burn some of it reading.
The day job has me working with 50 fortune 500 companies consulting in IT. Probably the biggest shock is how quickly some science fiction bits in my childhood have turned into science fact. More shocking is the secondary impacts to society and socialization. I am looking forward to reading another 5-10 years into the future with the latest round of stories.
That said, I'd love to hear what stories folks have found "edgy" in the last 8 years or so - especially those less heard of that didn't find it to film.

message 3922: by Jim (new)

Jim Vuksic Welcome, Dan.

Sounds like you have definitely earned the privilege to enjoy some relaxing reading time.

message 3923: by Scott (new)

Scott | 28 comments I'm Scott, and I read scifi and fantasy my entire life; I tend more toward fantasy-GRRM, Weeks, Lynch, Hobb, Abercrombie recent favorites; but I have read nearly everthing of note...As far as scifi goes, I have read some Assimov, Niven, Pournell, Heinlein, Robinson..

message 3924: by Jim (new)

Jim Vuksic Welcome, Scott.
Any friend of Robin Hobb is a friend of mine.
I also like her fantasy and sci-fi novels written under the pseudonym, Megan Lindholm.

M. Gary Berg (mgberg) | 8 comments Hi everyone, just joined the group a few days ago. I read everything I can get my eyes on (SciFi, History, War, Adventure, Crime, etc.) Looking for new authors & books that trigger my imagination. I like books that are a series like Twilight, Hunger Games, Divergent, I am Number Four, Darwath Series, etc. Take care all ...

Jim Vuksic Welcome, M. Gary.

However, I do have three years on you; so remember to respect your elder.

Jim Townsend | 14 comments Good morning everyone,

I joined this group about four years ago but haven't been very active. I've read (and rated) about a dozen books from the group's bookshelf, but not recently. I read books in series as well as standalone books. Slaughterhouse-Five is currently in third place on my to-read list.

message 3929: by Jim (new)

Jim Vuksic Welcome, Jim.
"Slaughterhouse-Five" is one of my all-time favorites.
I have been updating my "Books Read" list everytime I remember a book I have read in the past.
Thanks for jogging my memory.

message 3930: by Jim (new)

Jim Townsend | 14 comments Good morning, Jim!

The two books ahead of it are Death from the Skies!: These Are the Ways the World Will End..., a library book due December 28, 2013; and Where the Sidewalk Ends, which is the first of twelve (plus two alternate) books that I am reading next year as part of a challenge in another GR discussion group.

J. Kay | 10 comments Hello everyone, I just joined today and I'm pretty excited to be involved with an active group. I've been with goodreads for a while, but this is my first group to join. I'm a new author (don't worry, not going to spam ads). My favorite genre to read and write is fantasy and I can tell by the enthusiasm in these posts that I've joined the right group. Looking forward to being a part of the community.

Welcome to the madhouse, Dan. Good to see you here.

I recently read "Lesser Gods" by Duncan Long which might tickle your fancy if you like near-future dystopian stuff. Yes, the same Duncan Long that produces those great book covers. I think he's certifiably mad after reading the book, but he seems so "normal" otherwise (grin).

He self-published this one as an eBook, but I liked it anyway.

Of course, if you like dystopian future stuff, Wool by Hugh Howey (short story) is almost mandatory reading (and free on Amazon). Read it before the movie comes out.

Far future? John Bowers ("R" rated except for one) and Bruce Davis write great stories. I think you've read some of their stuff already.

Anyway, enjoy yourself in our little pond of SF fanatics.

Hey everybody, long time no see. Well the book is finally a movie, The Ark Of The Witch, can't wait to get back into the swing of things and finish a couple re-writes to two other novels and screenplays I'm working on.

message 3944: by Giorgos (new)

Giorgos Kazoulis | 1 comments Hi there! My name is Giorgos Kazoulis and I am trying to be an author (genres different than this group) but I do love Sci-Fi and Fantasy as much as everyone (i hope). Glad to have joined!

message 3945: by Jim (new)

Jim Vuksic Welcome, Giorgos.
Like you, several members of this group have an eclectic taste in reading that extends beyond science fiction and fantasy.
I think you will enjoy their company as they will yours.

message 3946: by Robyn (new)

Robyn Hi, everybody! (Please imagine Dr. Nick's voice.)

Anyway, I'm new to the group, and I like sci-fi and fantasy. Before jumping into the discussions, I figured it was only polite to introduce myself first.

Random bits of info: I read nearly every genre, but definitely tend towards more things in the sci-fi/fantasy shelf than others. I'm from California but now live in Oxfordshire (which somehow has led me to reading more British authors than not recently).

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Welcome.

message 3948: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi! I'm Sally. I'm a librarian in the Midwest and a writer. I've heard about how awesome this site is from everyone so here I am trying it. I'm a sci-fi/fantasy fan, and a fan of any good book--by good I mean fun, not deeply moving--I can't stand most literature, especially the modern variety.
Anyway, I'm not sure what I'm going to be doing here, but I have been enjoying rating my favorite books :)

MK (wisny) | 480 comments Hi, I'm MaryK, from Maine. I joined Goodreads in October, and this group sometime in November (maybe I was 10,000! heh :-p), but haven't started any of the group reads yet. Hoping to join in on some reads in January (had a huge backlog of other books to read). Hoping to take a look at the bookshelf challenge in the next couple days, see how many previous read titles I might be able to catch up with over 2014 :)

Welcome, Mary K.

I enjoyed a 12-day road trip from Bangor all the way down to Kittery, following the coastline, this past September.
You live in a beautiful state.
