I have an eclectic taste in reading as the "Books Read" section of my profile will reveal. It does include a number of science fiction books.
I have been retired for the past 12 years; so I now have time to do all the things I never had time to do before; like reading, reading, and more reading.

'The Century' (non-fiction) by Peter Jennings & Todd Brewster. - 'The War' (An Intimate History 1941 - 1945) by Geoffrey C. Ward & Ken Burns) - 'The Inverted World' (sci-fi) by Christopher Priest.

Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Stephanie and a long-time reader of science fiction. I grew up on Asimov, Clarke, Herbert, and Heinlein and still love them to this day. I'm also an author and will post about my book in the Author's section.
I hope to get a lot out of this group though as a reader! I'm always looking for new, astounding scifi to read. It'll be interesting to see the recommendations come out of this group.
Thanks for having me!

I'm Elizabeth and I'm a huge Sci-Fi and Fantasy fan. I've read authors from Mikhail Bulgakov to Laurell K. Hamilton. I'm always on the hunt for new authors, so I hope to see you all around!

Welcome, Joshua.
From what I gather from your introduction, "The Stolen Child" by Keith Donohue is a fantasy novel you might find truly fascinating.
Published in 2006, it is Mr. Donohue's first novel and became a national bestseller.

Welcome, Kaitlin.
You have good taste in authors.
Now that HBO's TV series, "Game of Thrones", has become an international sensation, I wonder how many readers will become big fans of Mr. Martin's "A Song of Fire and Ice" fantasy series?

I keep a giant spreadsheet with all the books I own and read and am SLOWLY transporting that data onto Goodreads.
Favorite authors are probably Gene Wolfe and Dan Simmons. Though Brandon Sanderson always puts out quality stuff and I'm perennially intimidated by Steven Erikson and Malazan.

The day job has me working with 50 fortune 500 companies consulting in IT. Probably the biggest shock is how quickly some science fiction bits in my childhood have turned into science fact. More shocking is the secondary impacts to society and socialization. I am looking forward to reading another 5-10 years into the future with the latest round of stories.
That said, I'd love to hear what stories folks have found "edgy" in the last 8 years or so - especially those less heard of that didn't find it to film.

Sounds like you have definitely earned the privilege to enjoy some relaxing reading time.

Any friend of Robin Hobb is a friend of mine.
I also like her fantasy and sci-fi novels written under the pseudonym, Megan Lindholm.

I am always glad to have someone of my generation join a group of which I too am a member.
However, I do have three years on you; so remember to respect your elder.

I joined this group about four years ago but haven't been very active. I've read (and rated) about a dozen books from the group's bookshelf, but not recently. I read books in series as well as standalone books. Slaughterhouse-Five is currently in third place on my to-read list.

"Slaughterhouse-Five" is one of my all-time favorites.
I have been updating my "Books Read" list everytime I remember a book I have read in the past.
Thanks for jogging my memory.

The two books ahead of it are Death from the Skies!: These Are the Ways the World Will End..., a library book due December 28, 2013; and Where the Sidewalk Ends, which is the first of twelve (plus two alternate) books that I am reading next year as part of a challenge in another GR discussion group.

Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "Hi guys. Goodreads has seen fit to stop updating me when there's been activity so I've missed a lot. Sorry. And welcome anyone I may have missed."
You profile seems to be buggy at the moment: you only have 1 friend according to what I see :(

Welcome to the madhouse, Dan. Good to see you here.
I recently read "Lesser Gods" by Duncan Long which might tickle your fancy if you like near-future dystopian stuff. Yes, the same Duncan Long that produces those great book covers. I think he's certifiably mad after reading the book, but he seems so "normal" otherwise (grin).
He self-published this one as an eBook, but I liked it anyway.
Of course, if you like dystopian future stuff, Wool by Hugh Howey (short story) is almost mandatory reading (and free on Amazon). Read it before the movie comes out.
Far future? John Bowers ("R" rated except for one) and Bruce Davis write great stories. I think you've read some of their stuff already.
Anyway, enjoy yourself in our little pond of SF fanatics.

Hi, Dan. Welcome. Followed your struggles with your kid's problems with regular prayers. Glad everything is finally under control.

Hey everybody, long time no see. Well the book is finally a movie, The Ark Of The Witch, can't wait to get back into the swing of things and finish a couple re-writes to two other novels and screenplays I'm working on.
check out the trailer when you have a chance:

According to your profile, an article you wrote appeared in Stepping Stones Magazine. Who knows? Rolling Stone Magazine may be next.

Like you, several members of this group have an eclectic taste in reading that extends beyond science fiction and fantasy.
I think you will enjoy their company as they will yours.

Anyway, I'm new to the group, and I like sci-fi and fantasy. Before jumping into the discussions, I figured it was only polite to introduce myself first.
Random bits of info: I read nearly every genre, but definitely tend towards more things in the sci-fi/fantasy shelf than others. I'm from California but now live in Oxfordshire (which somehow has led me to reading more British authors than not recently).
Hi! I'm Sally. I'm a librarian in the Midwest and a writer. I've heard about how awesome this site is from everyone so here I am trying it. I'm a sci-fi/fantasy fan, and a fan of any good book--by good I mean fun, not deeply moving--I can't stand most literature, especially the modern variety.
Anyway, I'm not sure what I'm going to be doing here, but I have been enjoying rating my favorite books :)

Welcome, Mary K.
I enjoyed a 12-day road trip from Bangor all the way down to Kittery, following the coastline, this past September.
You live in a beautiful state.
