Bev | 1 comments Hi all. My name is Bev and I live in beautiful Nova Scotia, I have 2 beautiful grandboys which keep me young and active, I work at a hospital which keeps me run off my feet and when I can grab a few minutes I try to get caught up on everything else.
I have been a voracious reader since I learned how......so many years ago. The book that got me hooked on fantasy when I was about 7 was the Gnomemobile. It absolutely fascinated me and I have been looking in used book stores for over 40 years on the off chance that I might find it again......no luck. I have managed to accumulate over 800 other books that I enjoy, this includes fantasy, SF, mystery, thrillers and even (yawn) some drama. I like the lighter, funnier side of things for my escapes so my faves are Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Piers Anthony, Christopher Stasheff, Robert Asprin, Terry Brooks, some Andre Norton and so many more.
I've been on Goodreads since April but it's only been the last few days that I've actually had a chance to look around and start to familarize myself with the site........AMAZING...I love what I've seen so far and I thank everyone who has added me as a friend I certainly do appreciate it.
To everyone else, feel free to friend me you guys are my kind of people.

Desiree (tondola) | 5 comments Hi, I'm the latest newcomer to the group, I just activated my GR account. I'm 38 and live in Turin (Italy) and have been reading fantasy and science fiction for almost as long as I can remember. My all time favs are Pratchett and Bujold, though the longer list is too long to fit here ;o)
I love reading and buy my purses according to the 'bookspace' they have, as I always have to have a book with me and I hope that this group will give my more suggestions on how to expand my book collection. Well met to everybody ;o)

V. | 1 comments Hello everyone! My name is Valerie, I am 31 years old from Buffalo, NY. I enjoy reading SciFi and Fantasy, but many other genres as well. Lately I have been reading Orson Scott Card, and I am on the third book of the Enders Series.

Levis Wheeler (lkeithwheeler) | 3 comments My name is L. Keith Wheeler. I've recently published my first novel on Amazon (both Createspace PoD and Kindle eBook). Being new to this I'm feeling my way around, trying to figure out how to get the right kind of attention.
I've lived in Georgia all my life, worked 30+ years for IBM in Information Technologies, hardware, software, services, problem determination and management. Traveled a fair piece of the world. I current deal with the technical architecture of content management systems. I am married, 2 children and 3 grandchildren.
I like Science Fiction, Fantasy and have read the genre since I was old enough to read. If it wasn't for the need to pay bills, I would most likely try my hand at writing full time. Being new, it remains to be seen if I can actually cut the mustard as a writer.

Busy as a one legged man in a hindside kicking contest. Between my paying job and trying to figure out how to get my book noticed things are bopping right along.

You do that :)

Also, just because the month is over, doesn't mean you can't still jump in on the discussion anyway. There are still a few discussions from past books that are going on as people pick up those books and find they have something to say.

So don't let it stop ya.

Hannah ⚔️ Jaedia (jaedia) | 11 comments Hello :)
I joined this club a while ago but haven't really ventured much further than grabbing recommendations here and there (I'm currently reading Poison Study and loving it). I tend to enjoy most genres of fiction, so long as the story is interesting enough and it's well-written, fantasy is probably my favourite though. I live in the UK, and sometimes don't read very much, though lately I've started getting back into it.

I am open to friends requests, hope to join in with a monthly book discussion some time in the future :)

message 1275: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Hannah :)

oh snap, I never did one of these myself :P

So uh, I'm Ala. I have opinions. They sometimes differ from other peoples. This just means that I'm better then them. Or something. No? Well. ok.

I enjoy just about any type of book, as long as it's good.

Oh, and I'm down with friend invites too. Since I, uh, don't have any at the moment :P

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 874 comments Hi, I'm new to this group, though some of you may have "run across me" elsewhere. I love science fiction and fantasy and have for many years. I read mostly fantasy now though a science fiction title still sneaks in now and again...and of course there are the "crossovers" and the "what was that science fiction or fantasy?" reads. You know the ones everyone is sure "they" know are either science fiction or fantasy...only what they know isn't exactly what everyone else knows. :)

I look forward to sharing thoughts on the books we love.

Chris Abel (abelchr) | 2 comments Hi, my name is Chris. I am originally from Ohio, but I have lived in Allentown, Pennsylvania, for the last 13 years with my wife and my son.

I have a PhD in Electrical Engineering and recently graduated with an MBA, but I would happily spend the rest of my life in a library. I am especially interested in World War II, biographies, and of course science fiction.

I first became hooked on SciFi after reading
I, Robot by Isaac Asimov by Isaac Asimov when I was 9.

I'm currently reading Grant by Jean Edward Smith by Jean Edward Smith .

message 1288: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid (ingridh) | 1 comments Hi all

I'm from the UK, female & born 1963. I think I initially entered the world of sci fi and fantasy fiction through the author Enid Blyton when I was about 5 years old. Loved all her fairy tale and fantasy stuff.

As I grew older I was then heavily influenced by my Dad who passed all his books onto me after he'd read them. Not sure some were appropriate at certain ages of my life but it was a form of sex education too!

I think my teens were dominated by Robert Heinlein, that was probably a rebellion against my catholic upbringing, I just loved his free thinking and exploration of society's norms; and dare I say it John Norman with his Gor books; and god love her, Anne Macaffery - How I adored the Pern books and the Crystal Singers; Tolkein of course; John Wyndham and I was also into Greek mythology.

Nowadays my favorite authors range incredibly wide, Tannith Lee, Greg Bear, Sheri Tepper, CJ Cherryh, Robin Hobb, George RR Martin, Octavia Butler, Anne Rice, Poppy Z Brite, Jacqueline Carey, Richard Morgan all spring to mind but I'll have a go at most things... I like both science fiction and fantasy but prefer those that challenge society's norms and explore alternative realities, love a strong lead character.

Currently on The King of The Crags by Stephen Deas.

Look forward to having my mind expanded by this group.

Paul Daniels (mrpld) | 6 comments Hello all,

I have to say, I'm a bit of a scifi/fantasy reader more than most other books (well, other than informative non-fiction that centers around science/physics so they go hand in hand :) ).

I live in the rural area of North Queensland in Australia with my wife (who's an author/novelist) and we generally work from home while retreating for the oppressive heat that comes every Summer.

We just got ourselves a Kindle3 so finally I can begin to read a lot more books again without having to spend so much money :)

Paul.

PS, anyone from Tasmania want to swap with me up here - I LOVE Tasmania for the beautiful scenery and wonderful weather.. much nicer than sitting in a tiny room all Summer desperately wishing for the return of weather below 40'C :( )

message 1296: by Manda (new)

Manda (ziadax) | 5 comments Hi I'm Manda. I joined this group back when I joined Goodreads a couple years ago and never really got into the whole discussion part of it, though I checked in on some of the recs. I'm trying to be more sociable now, though, and thought I'd finally get around to introducing myself. So hello. I'm a book addict. I don't want a cure. I read in many genre, sci-fi and fantasy among them. Mostly fantasy, though I'm trying to branch out into more sci-fi. I've just started reading the Heinlein pick for this month, which is already holding my interest, and I'm only in ch.2. a very good sign. :)

I'm open to any author/book suggestions in the genre anyone may have, as well as any friend requests. I don't have many here since I've not been very active.

Hi Cary,
I second the sentiments about the Hyperion tetralogy...I have never forgotten the image of Teilhard on the tree, and the concept of the cruciforms is flat out brilliant. Wish I could write that well.
