I have been a voracious reader since I learned how......so many years ago. The book that got me hooked on fantasy when I was about 7 was the Gnomemobile. It absolutely fascinated me and I have been looking in used book stores for over 40 years on the off chance that I might find it again......no luck. I have managed to accumulate over 800 other books that I enjoy, this includes fantasy, SF, mystery, thrillers and even (yawn) some drama. I like the lighter, funnier side of things for my escapes so my faves are Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Piers Anthony, Christopher Stasheff, Robert Asprin, Terry Brooks, some Andre Norton and so many more.
I've been on Goodreads since April but it's only been the last few days that I've actually had a chance to look around and start to familarize myself with the site........AMAZING...I love what I've seen so far and I thank everyone who has added me as a friend I certainly do appreciate it.
To everyone else, feel free to friend me you guys are my kind of people.

I love reading and buy my purses according to the 'bookspace' they have, as I always have to have a book with me and I hope that this group will give my more suggestions on how to expand my book collection. Well met to everybody ;o)

I've lived in Georgia all my life, worked 30+ years for IBM in Information Technologies, hardware, software, services, problem determination and management. Traveled a fair piece of the world. I current deal with the technical architecture of content management systems. I am married, 2 children and 3 grandchildren.
I like Science Fiction, Fantasy and have read the genre since I was old enough to read. If it wasn't for the need to pay bills, I would most likely try my hand at writing full time. Being new, it remains to be seen if I can actually cut the mustard as a writer.

Busy as a one legged man in a hindside kicking contest. Between my paying job and trying to figure out how to get my book noticed things are bopping right along.

The month isn't over yet, Zack. You can still catch up on Boneshaker :)

Zack wrote: "Thanks for the encouragement Ala. When I do track down and read the book I'll make sure to add to the discussion. Lee its nice to meet you too."
You do that :)
Also, just because the month is over, doesn't mean you can't still jump in on the discussion anyway. There are still a few discussions from past books that are going on as people pick up those books and find they have something to say.
So don't let it stop ya.

I joined this club a while ago but haven't really ventured much further than grabbing recommendations here and there (I'm currently reading Poison Study and loving it). I tend to enjoy most genres of fiction, so long as the story is interesting enough and it's well-written, fantasy is probably my favourite though. I live in the UK, and sometimes don't read very much, though lately I've started getting back into it.
I am open to friends requests, hope to join in with a monthly book discussion some time in the future :)
Hi Hannah :)
oh snap, I never did one of these myself :P
So uh, I'm Ala. I have opinions. They sometimes differ from other peoples. This just means that I'm better then them. Or something. No? Well. ok.
I enjoy just about any type of book, as long as it's good.
Oh, and I'm down with friend invites too. Since I, uh, don't have any at the moment :P

I look forward to sharing thoughts on the books we love.
Hiya Mike, and welcome, and whatnot.

I don't know why I have stayed away from books until now but I could not imagine life without one now.
I'm looking forward to some good conversations in the group.
Cheers
Alan
Maybe you had a bad incident as a child with a roving pack of rabid books?
Hi Matthew.
We're reading Moon? I really need to pay more attention around here... :P

I have a PhD in Electrical Engineering and recently graduated with an MBA, but I would happily spend the rest of my life in a library. I am especially interested in World War II, biographies, and of course science fiction.
I first became hooked on SciFi after reading

I'm currently reading

I'm from the UK, female & born 1963. I think I initially entered the world of sci fi and fantasy fiction through the author Enid Blyton when I was about 5 years old. Loved all her fairy tale and fantasy stuff.
As I grew older I was then heavily influenced by my Dad who passed all his books onto me after he'd read them. Not sure some were appropriate at certain ages of my life but it was a form of sex education too!
I think my teens were dominated by Robert Heinlein, that was probably a rebellion against my catholic upbringing, I just loved his free thinking and exploration of society's norms; and dare I say it John Norman with his Gor books; and god love her, Anne Macaffery - How I adored the Pern books and the Crystal Singers; Tolkein of course; John Wyndham and I was also into Greek mythology.
Nowadays my favorite authors range incredibly wide, Tannith Lee, Greg Bear, Sheri Tepper, CJ Cherryh, Robin Hobb, George RR Martin, Octavia Butler, Anne Rice, Poppy Z Brite, Jacqueline Carey, Richard Morgan all spring to mind but I'll have a go at most things... I like both science fiction and fantasy but prefer those that challenge society's norms and explore alternative realities, love a strong lead character.
Currently on The King of The Crags by Stephen Deas.
Look forward to having my mind expanded by this group.
Hello and welcome and all that

I have to say, I'm a bit of a scifi/fantasy reader more than most other books (well, other than informative non-fiction that centers around science/physics so they go hand in hand :) ).
I live in the rural area of North Queensland in Australia with my wife (who's an author/novelist) and we generally work from home while retreating for the oppressive heat that comes every Summer.
We just got ourselves a Kindle3 so finally I can begin to read a lot more books again without having to spend so much money :)
Paul.
PS, anyone from Tasmania want to swap with me up here - I LOVE Tasmania for the beautiful scenery and wonderful weather.. much nicer than sitting in a tiny room all Summer desperately wishing for the return of weather below 40'C :( )

Paul.

I'm open to any author/book suggestions in the genre anyone may have, as well as any friend requests. I don't have many here since I've not been very active.

Hi Cary,
I second the sentiments about the Hyperion tetralogy...I have never forgotten the image of Teilhard on the tree, and the concept of the cruciforms is flat out brilliant. Wish I could write that well.
Heyas Mike. Or should we call you 44? :P
