LOL! I am a trusting person...
Actually, I think it tracks IP addresses thus stopping multiple votes but I could be wrong...

Why not go with the top 12 but use an alternating sequence... ie. #1,12,2,11,3,10 .... then stop at this point and ask ACTIVE contributors if they want to continue with the remaining 6 (they will have a good feel for the range/quality/other characteristics of the first round selection (from top to bottom) or if they want to have a new round of voting for the second half of they year.... this will allow active newcomers have some say in the second half if the selection process was not "rich" enough at the start, but if everything is working well then everyone can work together to revise the list and bring it closer in line to members tastes and desires..
ps. in case anyone wonders, I am quite happy with all the "Baker's Dozen" at the top of the current standings (some of which I have read, most I have not) with the exception of Dune.... which I don't think I can bring myself to return to. My suggestion is simply to eliminate the chance that a "first past the gate" order might result in two much similarity of style early in the process.
I agree! I hate being locked in to anything. The poll will last for a few more days and then I'll finalize it and we'll figure out a starting order.
And I have tried to start Dune so many times... Just can't like it...

I've read Dune, but I really don't think I could re-read it. I would be interested in a discussion about it though, that's for sure.

With that said, I second the first 6 plan and then revoting. Maybe leaving Dune for a revote for the final 6.

I didn't mean to bash Dune quite as heavily as it may have come across... indeed I rated it 4 stars here on Goodreads (and Dune Messiah 3 stars) but never made it on to the rest (I didn't even realize till reading your comment that the series had moved on to the "prequel" stage of its life cycle)...
I just meant that there are some books (like jokes) that are entertaining once only... and with Dune, at least for me, was in that category! This is in marked contrast to several others in the top 12 (including Gateway, Sundiver, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress) that, for me at least, are all worth a third go round ... Dune is a good yarn even if hard to get into and I will still follow the discussion with interest if it is chosen.

So far the results are quite convincing. I may do one of two things:
1. Pick the top twelve to read despite a huge tie near the end.
2. Pick the top six and throw the rest in for a second poll later on. Maybe I'll weed out the no votes...
In any case here are those results:
Slaughterhouse Five 9
A Wizard of Earthsea 8
Snow Crash 7
Gateway 6
Black Sun Rising 6
Sundiver 6
Ender's Game 6
Neverwhere 6
Dune 5
The Sparrow 5
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress 5
The Mote in God's Eye 5
Neuromancer 5
The Nameless Day 4
The Tomb 3
Hades' Daughter 3
Gardens of the Moon 3
The Speed of Dark 3
The Golden Age 3
Quicksilver 3
His Majesty's Dragon 3
The Eye of the World 3
Trouble and Her Friends 2
Tigana 2
Foreigner 2
Doomsday Book 2
Transformation 2
The Curse of Chalion 2
The Giver 1
Dragon Bones 1
The Gilded Chain 1
Alamut 1
Ill Wind 1
Right now these are the top 13 and we would need to place one into 2009:
Slaughterhouse Five
A Wizard of Earthsea
Snow Crash
Gateway
Black Sun Rising
Sundiver
Ender's Game
Neverwhere
Dune
The Sparrow
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress
The Mote in God's Eye
Neuromancer
After that it is a dead heat! Let me know what you would prefer. Heck, we can add more books to the fight and I can try to come up with a better method for polling later if need be.
