I still have a very long list of TBR books on my book shelf and I'm sure they will all be enjoyable not sure which one I'm going to read next might start Beautiful Chaos (Caster Chronicles, #3) by Kami Garcia or The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen

Hazel West | 70 comments I finished Purity of Blood (Adventures of Captain Alatriste #2) by Arturo Pérez-Reverte 4 stars, really enjoyed it, again, I have to reccomend that series to Dumas fans. Then finished Ratcatcher (Matthew Hawkwood, #1) by James McGee but it was kind of meh (only 2 stars)

Now I'm reading The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope which I'm liking a lot so far, and then I'm just going to finish up reading the third Ruso book Persona Non Grata (Gaius Petreius Ruso, #3) by Ruth Downie which are always good, and I'm trying to savour since there's currently only five of them =(

DeAnna (dee84812) | 671 comments I'm reading In the After by Demitria Lunetta and listening to Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1) by Beth Revis . Across the Universe is strictly on faith after seeing so many people love it, since it's not my current genre, and the synopsis doesn't sound overly appealing to me. However, the same thing happened with The Fault in Our Stars, and I loved it, so I'm staying hopeful.

Ok so David I did not know anything about John Green's controversy until you mentioned it. I watched the above video and think perhaps his message is correct but people are taking it the wrong way?? He is giving credit to people who have helped him along the way which is more than appropriate. Trust me there are many a book I've read in the past where a good editor would have came in handy! Anywho that is just my interpretation...that John is trying to say he works with a team and that no one can publish and sells books on their own. I think this is mostly true - everyone should have people who edit and critique their writings and of course writers need printers and book sellers too. As I am not an author I could be way off the mark - maybe you can say more to this David. Like I said - I think his message is true, maybe the way he presented it was more offensive than the message???

Yeah, I agree Heidi, I think people might be taking it the wrong way, and it was probably due to the way he presented it. I think both ways of publishing are valid. But until I became a blogger, I missed out on so many self published books that are just amazing. Some of them could have used a bit more editing, but a lot of times I don't go by that as alot of them are ARCs.

This makes me think of music and YouTube. So many people are being discovered that wouldn't have been 15 years ago because of YouTube. Now the consumer actually has a say in what they want to listen to.

Ereaders gave readers the same opportunity. Its an easier and more affordable way to get new books into readers hands, and "The Machine" isn't as necessary. That's not to say that you can't go that route. Maybe the author wants to concentrate solely on writing, and not be so worried about promoting. To each his own.

I will still read what I want to read either way. :)

I think I talked about how an author wouldn't be an author without his fans in my review of TFIOS. By watching this video I think that John Green understands this fact. I'm not really sure what he is talking about when he names companies at the end of the video but he does say that he has an editor and publisher and that he doesn't do it on his own. TFIOS was the first book I read by this author so I'm not familiar with his other works or how he got his start in the book business. But John Green makes a point when he says that he wouldn't be anyone without Librarians, bookstores, and the people who buy his books. You have to have fans who read and buy your books in order to have a book on the top of the best seller list for as long as he has. I hope this rant makes sense!

It did to me. And also, I thought of another point. Okay, so he has millions of fans, and I suppose he could self publish if he wanted to. But he started from nothing, just like anyone else, and has a team that helped get him to where he is now. It would be a little ungrateful is he just cut them all out of it now. Just to make himself more money? Yeah, if he did that I would lose all respect for him!

OK, sorry, I threw that bomb about John Green out there and then I've been absent from the conversation! Well, I agree with everything that's been said here so far. I don't think he necessarily came across the way he wanted to, and he definitely made a mistake with some of the one-liners that could easily be snatched out by the media out of context and splashed on headlines. His robust comments were mainly directed at the point of whether he would ever considering self-publishing considering how big his social media following is. He probably gave a longer answer than necessary, but his point was that he wouldn't, because he credits and acknowledges that he's not a one man show. I think any author (including Indies) who think that their success is ALL of their own doing would have to be pretty narcissistic. After all, without the readers/bloggers who tell their friends/members about our books, we don't get ANYWHERE. So another fact by John Green.

HOWEVER, I do think that the timing and the spirit of his comments were somewhat misplaced. He was receiving an Indie author award of some kind, so he probably should have held back a little and focused his thoughts on the positive sides of Indie publishing. He could have cautioned Indies to build a team to help them in their publishing efforts as it's evident when an Indie author does not put in the necessary level of effort to polish their book to an acceptable level (that, of course, being subjective in and of itself). I personally didn't take ANY offense to John's remarks as I have the attitude of what works for one person might not work for another, and there are many routes to success in this world, however, I did think he handled the situation rather poorly, as many before have when placed in the spotlight and under the harsh scrutiny of the media and book community. Either way, I don't think he cares as he's doing quite all right :)

message 3328: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 2372 comments Either way, I don't think he cares as he's doing quite all right :)

Hahahaha - I agree with you David and everyone else! I did not realize he was receiving an indie award when he made this speech so in that context it does seem ill timed and/or more inappropriate. I do think the media is making this a bigger deal that it need be. It seems to me John was upset with someone or upset about something prior to filming this and he was trying to be snarky but came across more irritated. I don't know the back story or what got him going nor is it my business. Either way I am just going to take from it that like the song says, "everybody needs somebody" and leave it at that!

I finished it and gave it 3 stars. I just don't know...I loved parts of it, but the middle part of the book really kinda sucked. Harper makes some really stupid mistakes, but she does pay for them. I wasn't a big fan of the writing, either. A lot of run on sentences, and looooong speeches on a conversation that went on for 10 pages..and too much flipping back and forth between time periods...I was confused a lot and had to keep rereading. I loved the ending, the last 20 pages or so were beautiful. It was one of those books that had me hooked just to find out what happens with all the characters, but wasn't really that good. I've read a lot of good reviews on it, and some not so good reviews. I think its a love it or hate it kind of book, and I'm kind of on the fence.

Hope that helps you!
