I think you should consider reading them! In my opinion, the "romance" is not the focus of the series at all. It's more just a normal part of life, as romantic connections and attraction are a normal part of most people's lives. But the twisted and AMAZING plot of the book is centered about a struggle between the oppressed, the oppressors, and some really dark secrets :)

So even if you aren't impressed with the first book, I'd recommend reading the second as well.

Agreed! I love the characters, though, too. I love the romance, but agree its not a focal point, although the relationship between them do remind me a bit of Cassandra Clare's books. So I love that factor!
I've loved the story since the beginning, I just get lost in this world!

"Nope. Not that I remember. I listened to the audiobook and sometimes that helps though.
Just finished this one
and now I am reading this book that I won here on Goodreads called The Fairy Wren:

"Not at all, but even though I loved it, I could kind of see why someone could have to drudge through some bits of it.
Stephanie wrote: "did anyone else have a hard time getting into
"I loved it from the start, but remember we all have different tastes. There are a lot of books out there that everyone I knew loved and I just couldn't get into.
Stephanie wrote: "did anyone else have a hard time getting into
"I thought it was a bit much to take in when I started, but by the end I really liked it!
Stephanie wrote: "did anyone else have a hard time getting into
"Me. I feel like a lot of the scenes could've been cut or at least part of the info dump.
As for what I just finished:
It was awesome.

Yes, quite a twist at the end.
To be frank I dident like the beginning or the middle thought, I liked the setting, and the generall idea, but thought it could have been exequuted much better. Still going to read the rest of the series, its ally carter after all.

I'm reading
right now - and very much enjoying it! Just been super busy for the last few weeks. . . .
Stephanie wrote: "did anyone else have a hard time getting into
"Yeah, it took me a couple of chapters to really get in to it; before that I was curious, but not really loving it. But by the time I was maybe about a quarter of the way in I was hooked, and I ended up really loving it, and being eager for the rest of the series.
Finished
and its my favorite Holly Black book yet! So good! For those who liked The Iron Fey by Julie Kagawa or anything by Holly Black, I'd suggest reading this!

I want to read this because he is Michael Grant's favorite author and I love Grant!
Just finished reading
I'm having trouble deciding on this book. On the one hand, I flew through it. It was immensely entertaining, and reminded me of Ashfall by Mike Mullin in a lot of ways. I also loved that it was a dad and his teenage daughter trying to survive, and there was no romance going on at all.
My issue was with the ending a bit. Things got a bit too incredible to believe for me...although it was an original, unique idea, and could happen...but a lot of it seemed too convenient, especially with the MC, her grandfather, and the Sheriff. If you read it, you'll see what I mean.
But for entertainment value, I do think it deserves 4 stars, despite some of these issues! Or at least a 3.5 :)
