Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 957 comments I finished The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater last night. Oh my GLOB I loved this book! I recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it.

Then I read My Haunted House (Araminta Spookie, #1) by Angie Sage a short children's book, mainly because I like to put a little space between books in a series I am reading. It as decent.

Up next, The Dream Thieves (The Raven Cycle, #2) by Maggie Stiefvater which I'll be starting tonight or tomorrow :)

Aw, I'd hold off if it wasn't a library book :( I am a bit of a slow reader, lately, though(got 10 times more busy in the past couple months) so if yo find it let me know, and maybe you can meet me part way through :)

I can really see myself ending up a fan of the same caliber if the rest of this series holds up and if I read anything else by her that's as good. We'll see. I went into Raven Boys with no expectations, so if she can meet the now high expectations, she's earned my fandom.

I won a copy of these two books and really enjoyed them. It is an original concept, not your usual scifi read.

message 9320: by Donna (last edited Oct 04, 2014 09:47AM) (new)

Donna (donanicole) | 897 comments Ok, I realize this is a YA group and I do like YA stories. But I am really a post apocalypse reader, with or without zombies. Also a dystopian reader. Those are my genres and I pretty much stay in them. I used to read only true mysteries or fictional ones. Then I read Twilight and all that series. Three times. Maybe four. Got into the movies too. I know, how silly, a young woman who is totally zonked by a man. Well, I've been there, who hasn't? Then The Walking Dead came on TV and I was open for zombie stories. So so many of those now, good and bad. I have found many good ones. Then the Hunger Games and I read those and my world was changed. I do like some romance in my stories, but I don't like romance to be the main driver. So I don't read straight romances.

So I want to thank you all for letting this post apocalypse dystopian reading woman into your YA group.

Donna wrote: "Ok, I realize this is a YA group and I do like YA stories. But I am really a post apocalypse reader, with or without zombies. Also a dystopian reader. Those are my genres and I pretty much stay in ..."

There are SO MANY good books out there, and several have really opened me up to reading new genres, etc. Twilight is what really got me into YA as well, then The Hunger Games. I think The Hunger Games are revolutionary books. Actually, Twilight too. They got SO MANY people reading YA! Doesn't even matter if they are good are not!

And I look at Twilight just a bit deeper than the love story aspect. Obviously that's the thing that drives the series, but I actually think of it more as a girl coming into her own and realizing what she can really be. And she had to make the BIGGEST SACRIFICE of all to get there--give up her life for her unborn child. And she did it all on FAITH. That, to me, is the point of the series.

You are right of course, about Twilight. It is about a young woman finding herself. I have read or tried to read other genres like the witch and paranormal ones but so many of those are so much talk and not enough action. So I love my apocalypse/dystopian genre with a little romance thrown in.

I think I have 5 books going at one time too! And yay for all the books you listed! That's quite an amazing selection!! I would not know which to pick up first either between Fire Country and Brew! Both are my favorites!!

message 9331: by Tommy (new)

Tommy Hancock (tommyhancock) | 957 comments I'm neutral about Twilight, myself. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. It unarguably got a lot of people, particularly younger females, reading books, which can only be a good thing. A lot of the books we discuss here in this group are popular in large part because of people who got into reading because of Twilight.

Harry Potter and the Hunger Games deserve credit as well, but I see them hated on less than Twilight. Plus, since I love both of those series I've done my gushing about them and will continue to do so, so I feel less obliged to point out my objective respect haha.
