Cher (sharpei) | 61 comments The characters past is backstory so everyone can understand how each character ticks and you have to have a book every once in a while that deals with character development. I prefer to have that discussed within each book, say a little at a time instead of one character all at once. I do also prefer the case-oriented books with a little humor, that way its all balanced. A little bit of everything.

mlady_rebecca I tend to prefer the books with significant character development or character back story. Or cases that directly involve the main characters or their nearest and dearest. That gives you a mix of emotional stories and humorous situations like Eve and the baby shower.

Personally, I find the straight mysteries more forgettable.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments I'm with Rebecca. I find the straight mysteries more forgettable, as well! Admittedly, I'm not really in this for the mysterious element anyway, but for the romance/character development.

I actually quite like it when Eve and Roarke butt heads/fight. Well, not the fighting, but seeing how they work through their issues. One of the things I love most about this series is seeing how their marriage develops, so those struggles are very important in strengthening their relationship.

And of course, the side characters are all AMAZING! I want Nadine and Baxter to find significant others... :) Especially Baxter. Can you see him wrapped around some woman's finger? Oh, the squad would make so much fun of him! Heehee!!

Dee Sauter (indeathaddict) | 1070 comments I go along with the group. I definately prefer the back story or the emotional story rather than the mystery. I can pick up a book and say oh so and so did it and this is why. If it were only that I would never reread it.

Mystery1959 | 1 comments If you don't miss your favorite character when the story comes to an end than the author has not done there job & you won't be anticipating the next book. This is why weep coming back to find out what is going to happen next. I agree that my favorite books have it all mystery, romance, action & most of all a really good twist.

Jeanie Jackson I agree that the characters are what make the books stand out to me. I can find many good suspense/thrillers but I don't go back and read them over and over once I know what happens.

When I look back at those I consider to be on my top ten list, they all seem to be those where the mystery was interesting AND there was a major storyline involving one of the recurring characters. They had a pivotal moment or something devastating happened to them.
