I really like this idea. If other easy peasy members are also willing could we do some more themes based on writers from different countries? I tend to get stuck in a rut of just reading English and American writers so this would really interest me. One author we could consider for this theme is Isabelle Allende. She was born in Chile and raised in Peru (or maybe it's the other way round). She does live in the USA now though - would that matter? If it does, how about Patrícia Melo? She was born and still lives in Brazil. She has about 4 or 5 books available in English. There is one available in my local library which is fairly small, so members who rely on their libraries for books will hopefully have a fighting chance of getting one of her books
was thinking more of authors who come from latin america like your coehlo etc and not north america ( ie usa or canada)
Please lets not read Coehlo though, I read one of his books liked it, started another hated it, don't wish to read anymore!!!
well all get your thinking caps and come up with some different authors and maybe new experiences for some of the group :)
Stephen wrote: "was thinking more of authors who come from latin america like your coehlo etc and not north america ( ie usa or canada)"Isabelle Allende is regarded as a Latin American writer. I think it's because she was born and brought up there. She's also got plenty of books available in English which I thought might make things easier for us. If you'd rather put Patricia Melo into the poll though, that's fine by me.
If we are struggling to think of particular Latin American writers how about The Oxford Book of Latin American Short Stories? I am not a great fan of short stories in general, but I read them if I want to explore a new genre or "try out" new authors. You can usually identify if you like an author's writing style from a short story.
I quite like short stories if I want a quick fix and like JackieB says its a good way to check out a new genre
So the book for October is Love in the Time of Cholera. I'll give it a go, but I didn't do too well the last time I tried one of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Mind you, I'd never heard of magical realism then so I didn't have a clue what he was up to! Maybe that will amke a difference
I'll have to give this one a miss. I read LITTOC a little over a year ago and it's too soon for a re-read. Got lots to catch up on though.
