Colin Heaton (colin1962) | 2011 comments Having worked off and on in the TV and motion picture industries for many years, I came to know many celebrities. Most were self absorbed vapid types. However, a few were very humble and nice people, and a few became friends.

They loved history, such as Harry Hamlin, and his knowledge of medieval history is remarkable, and I remember sitting and smoking cigars as we talked about the Crusades.

James B Sikking was himself a military historian, and loved all aspects of military history. Guys like these were well read, educated and they could sit and talk for hours on all these subjects, and it was quite refreshing.

Gene Simmons is also not just a math wizard but also a lover of history, especially WW II as his mother is a Holocaust survivor.

I agree with Liam on the whole, keep the celebrity crap out of the historical forum as much as possible.

Operation paperback is a volunteer group that provides you with addresses of military people, bases and families plus the types of books being requested.

You select, package and send them your paperbacks.

Mike | 3646 comments Thanks for that pointer Phrodrick. I just did a reorg and cull of my library and have more than a few to get rid of. Now I know where to send some.

Definitely got one today. Profile said they've been a member since 2010, yet they have no books listed in any form. Also, the "About Me" portion was all in Cyrillic...

I'll tell you a tale of peace and love
Whack fol the diddle all the di do day
Of the land that reigns all lands above
Whack fol the diddle all the di do day
May peace and plenty be her share
Who kept our homes from want and care
Oh God bless England is our prayer
Whack fol the diddle all the di do day

Whack fol the diddle all the di do day
So we say, Hip Hooray!
Come and listen while we pray
Whack fol the diddle all the di do day

When we were savage, fierce and wild
Whack fol the diddle all the di do day
She came as a mother to her child
Whack fol the diddle all the di do day
She gently raised us from the slime
And kept our hands from hellish crime
And she sent us to Heaven in her own good time!
Whack fol the diddle all the di do day

Whack fol the diddle, etc.

Our fathers oft were naughty boys
Whack fol the diddle all the di do day
For pikes and guns are dangerous toys
Whack fol the diddle all the di do day
From Bearna Baoil to Bunker Hill
They made poor England cry her fill
But old Brittania loves us still!
Whack fol the diddle all the di do day

Whack fol the diddle, etc.

Now Irishmen, forget the past!
Whack fol the diddle all the di do day
And think of the day that's coming fast
Whack fol the diddle all the di do day
When we shall all be civilized
Neat and clean and well-advised
And won't Mother England be surprised?
Whack fol the diddle all the di do day

Whack fol the diddle all the di do day
So we say, Hip Hooray!
Come and listen while we pray
Whack fol the diddle all the di do day...

Liz V. (wwwgoodreadscomlizv) | 693 comments I'd not heard of Hamel and have added Monash's Masterpiece: The battle of Le Hamel and the 93 minutes that changed the world to the TBR list. The Sydney paper had an excerpt on Two Gun Harry Dalziel VC.

I've a great-great-grandpa named George Washington Lafayette. Not much guessing on which side his dad was, but the same can't be said for most of my ancestors. Our first civil war.

Imagine how easy it could have been. All we wanted were the rights of free-born Englishmen.

Mike | 3646 comments At least one Brit appreciated us colonials. "He (Ernest Bevin) thought a lot of the Americans. When one asked why he kept a life size painting of George III behind his desk he answered: “ ’E’s my hero. If he hadn’t been so stupid, you wouldn’t have been strong enough to come to our rescue in the war.”

Boudewijn (boudalok) | 403 comments So finally. The long awaited upgrade of the Android app. It did seem to become more and more outdated, especially compared to the IOS app, but the new version does seem a big improvement. Finally, an option to like reviews on the book page instead of being restricted to the updates page only.

RIP...and Good Night Vietnam.

Liz V. (wwwgoodreadscomlizv) | 693 comments In the two months since joining this group, my TBR list has doubled, after I had ruthlessly trimmed it to doable. Yikes.

But, looking at some of your lists convinced me, I am a wimp.

Nonetheless, I was pleased to come across today's post on https://raforall.blogspot.com. A trainer of librarians offers advice on dealing with TBR anxiety. Makes sense actually, as librarians see books about which we never hear and add them to their lists.

Interesting blog. The buddy reads/monthly theme reads reduce my TBR anxiety while simultaneously increasing it as group members write about books I just gotta have. Neverending circle.

TBR anxiety? In this day and age there is much about which to be anxious, but my TBR isn't among the top ten.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) | 20093 comments My TBR pile does cause anxiety in my household, mainly with my wife but I'm not too sure if it's anxiety or suppressed rage :)

message 1838: by Liam (last edited Aug 15, 2018 10:50PM) (new)

Liam (dimestoreliam) | 498 comments Happily, my wife doesn't really know how many books are on my "to read" shelves, although I may be in trouble if she ever actually counts them! I've been quite lucky over the last year or so in that I've managed to bring home several books that she wants to read, which gets me off the hook quite nicely... Of course, whenever I get a bit crazy there's always the old stand-by: "Look dear, I've been to the bakery and brought you some treats!". Then, while she takes the pastry-box to the kitchen, I slip quietly upstairs with the books, hahaha...
As far as anxiety, though, I'll second Manray9's comment above...

My situation is similar's to Rick's ... the wife who yesterday tried to count my Military History books yesterday to prove a point.. gave up after 200 and something... then the stages of anger, silence , grumblings, banging of stuff, no dinner for me, then the intense discussions! (I order pizza and went to bed after I pointed out recently that she had brought me ten new Military history book while I was in Hospital and that I love her) The same complaint will come up again every three weeks... Mined you Liam's idea works well also!!

message 1841: by Jonny (new)

Jonny | 2117 comments I get away with most of my tbr pile, mainly because a lot of it is on the kindle... out of sight, out of mind. I did get called out over last winter, when I was restocking on some science fiction I'd originally read back in my youth, but that's calmed down now...

Errrr no. I keep my book buying habit reasonably under control. I think if she was exposed to the full horror of book addiction (i.e. you lot) she might have second thoughts!

carl theaker | 1560 comments One 'problem' which I'm sure you all experience is that I'll get the list whittled down a bit, but then you have a birthday, or Christmas or some event and people are relieved that they know what to get you, WW2 books!
