Likewise...
...And now for something completely different!I never imagined, even in my worst nightmares, that I would ever have reason to quote (or, rather, paraphrase) the infamous song by Country Joe & the Fish. Even as a small child, during the early 1970s, I despised both their music and their politics. However, à propos today's news:
And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is... IRAN!!!
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.
Pleasant dreams, ladies & gentleman!!!
Bou wrote: "Is anyone getting these spam friend requests lately, or is it just me?"I've gotten few friend requests lately, several of which I have no idea how or why, aside from the fact we have some books in common.
Bou wrote: "Is anyone getting these spam friend requests lately, or is it just me?"Two in the last several weeks. The first I unfriended and blocked. The second I used the ignore button.
For whatever reason, I always have a long list of weirdos & self-promoters sending friend requests, along with the occasional racist (damned if I can figure that one out- I would hope my hatred of bigotry is obvious). Hell, I'm impressed when someone sends a request actually based on common interests & tastes...
The requests are accompanied by a message inviting me to click a link to acquire a free downloadable ebook. If I receive a new one, I will add a screenshot. In the meantime I strongly advise everybody NOT to click this link, as it will probably be yet another fishing attempt. I hope Goodreads maintenance has taken notice.

Yeah. It has unfortunately been my experience that there is always a certain (albeit exceedingly small) percentage of those scum around the edges of anything having to do with WWII history. We have been exceedingly lucky in this group, knocking on wood, that we have not had difficulties with individuals of that nature...

Oh great, I just got a friend request from some "person" allegedly in Brooklyn, N.Y. who has no photo, a generic sounding name, 23 friends... ...and exactly 1 book. Not to mention a suspicious-looking phrase in Cyrillic letters under "About Me"...
BBC is reporting on a diary of a carpenter inscribed on the underside of a parquet floor in a French castle in 1780-81, revealing the doings in a small village--from infanticide to complaints about the conduct, and poor medical skills, of the abbe.Evidently the writings have been compiled in a book entitled Joachim's Floorboards, not listed on GR.

So Penguin/Random House have a giveaway, which when you sign up for it has a little quiz that will tell you what type of reader you are. Here is what I got:
I‘m The Stack Stalker
You got the Stack Stalker! You’re a master of the Dewey Decimal System and are proud to show off your collection of overlooked book bin treasures! Your friends know you love to read, but do they even know how much? Phew—that’s an awful lot of books on those shelves.

L'histoire retrouvée d'un village français by Jacques-Olivier Boudon.

Highly recommended and it took maybe two days and no more than 5 minutes of my time.
Felt good too.

Spent yesterday afternoon and this morning conducting a cull of my library, sad to say I had to pack away about four boxes of books either to give to charity or sell to my local second hand book shop. My wife's new policy, a book in - a book out :(

Tough policy, did she talk to my wife? Same policy in effect here. Donated some books to charity last Saturday and have two large book bags to take up to a second hand shop for credit.
MR9 - My wife has long suffered from my addiction, I'm trying to do the right thing for as long as I possibly can, can't say for how long though :)

Got a new 'friend' request today:https://imgur.com/KpSJ6nC
Posting example here for awareness. I discovered you have the option to flag a friend request to the GR site owners, which I duly did.

I've had similar friend requests made to me as well. Three times I think, always referencing a historical book I've reviewed or marked as "To Read".
I have adjusted my profile so my name appears as Liz V., to avoid confusion with the author-member of this group.

What can be scarier than a Tiger Tank, I ask myself?

I received the same "invite" and just ignored it.
If you go over to the "Goodreads Feedback" and search for Sarah Jessica Parker, you will see lots of complaints...and this explanation:Hi Buck, we're testing a new way of letting members know when a notable person, in this case Sarah Jessica Parker, joins Goodreads. We think these sorts of readers can help bring our members together and start new and interesting conversations. We want to make it easier for fans to find and follow their reviews. There isn't currently any way to opt out of these notifications, but I will pass your comments above on to our team.
Can't escape celebrity culture anywhere...
Erik wrote: "I've had similar friend requests made to me as well. Three times I think, always referencing a historical book I've reviewed or marked as "To Read"."I flag them as Spam and ask GR to remove them. So far 3 for 3 gone within a few hours.

You are more pro-active than I am, Mike- I noticed the Sarah Jessica Parker thing in my notifications as well, but ignored it. The really aggravating thing about that (aside from the fact that I have no interest whatsoever in interacting with television actresses generally, which should be obvious to GR) is the fact that the notification is made to look as if it is from me to myself. Typical tone-deafness on the part of GR staff; what the hell do they think we are all doing here anyway? This is clearly not the appropriate venue for idiotic "celebrity" bullshit...
SJP aside it is about trading on a famous name. So basically $$$. Meantime I see they are pushing Follow and hiding Compare Books. Why would some one follow anyone not already friend if they do not first look to see common interests and interesting opinion?

Just noticed this after your post. Where do they come up with these ideas? Seems like they want to make GR like Facebook?
