I would have read this mid 90's. Not sure when it was published. I believe main characters were in teens and basically he only thing i remember is there was weird weather...such as it rained shards of glass I believe, and they had to take cover in a cave (I think). I don't know if they were on earth and there was some event to cause all this or if it was on another planet. Sorry so vague and i hope someone can help!

Hmm... this is a long shot, but in Anne MacCaffrey's Pern books it rains some sort of little alien "thread" that is sharp or burns when it touches human skin.
No, I'm pretty sure that isn't it. I don't remember much, but am sure there wasn't a dragon element involved. If I am remembering correctly, it was kind of a story of survival...escaping weird weather and treacherous conditions. I'm also pretty sure it was a full length book and not a short story...I can't recall how it ended or even began, something just reminded me today of the "glass" rain, and I really wanted to remember the title!
There is a scene in Marion Bradley's The Colors of Space where the MC Bart shelters from deadly hail in a cave. It's quite an old book but not really dated, and available free on Project Gutenberg if you want to check it out.

It's been so long, the description didn't ring any bells, but I will reread to see if that is the right one.
ok, thought I'd posted here but don't see it, so here goes my suggestion again. Perhaps Damnation Alley by Roger Zelazny. In a couple of different places in the book weird things fall from the sky (including trash.) This is after some kind of disaster. Its been a very long time since I read the story, so don't remember what the original cause was. And pay NO attention to the movie of the same name that starred George Peppard and Jan Michael Vincent. It took very minor points from the story for the movie.

Either way, it looks like a book I will enjoy!
Another long shot; The Rains of Eridan by HM Hoover? I've read several of her books but not that one, so It's just a wild guess.
Andria wrote: "Another long shot; The Rains of Eridan by HM Hoover? I've read several of her books but not that one, so It's just a wild guess."Thanks for the guess, but I don't think it is right. I am going to try to track down a copy to see though. Thanks!
This description rings a bell... Could it be that the strange weather was a recurring ice storm? And I have the vague impression that the teens were on a stud farm (for holidays maybe?) or somewhere else that has something to do with horses when it all began.Unfortunately I can't remember the title, I only remember that I got the book from our library back then.

If you remember the title let me know and I'll check it out. Thanks!
What about Weather Eye by Lesley Howarth. Published 1995. "It is 1999 and the weather has gone crazy. Hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and meteor showers threaten an increasingly worried population." It starts with the girl getting hit in the head with a piece of flying farm equipment, so that might fit with the horse farm clue.
This book reminds me of The Weathermonger by Peter Dickinson. It's not an exact fit, but the odd weather is a big part of the story. This is one of a series of three.
I came here to suggest Peter Dickinson's "The Weathermonger" too, so it may be worth checking into that one.
I'll grab copies of Weather Eye and The Weathermonger and see if they fit. I've got lots of reading to do since covers and descriptions aren't jiggling anything loose. Thank you all for the suggestions. Even if they don't fit, they should be great reads!

I'm reading that right now! I'll leave a description of any strange weather that I come across (none so far).

Thank you!
Well, was not Damnation Alley, going to try Weather Eye and The Weathermonger next...any other suggestions would be great. I've found two great reads since starting this search.
Re: Rains of Eridan. This is probably not the book you're thinking of. The rain is normal, watery wain, and it's plot role is that in the rainy season (view spoiler). The main characters are a woman scientist and an orphan girl.

I'm glad you let us know - and I hope at least you're liking it. Sometimes it takes a long time to get books solved here, so keep bumping every couple of months or so.
I did enjoy it very much...as a matter of fact, after I posted that it wasn't the one I was looking for, I went ahead and finished it...I'm just hoping the book I'm looking for isn't a figment of my imagination!
Hi Jayme, here are a few other titles that have come up in my searching:
The Voyage Begun
The Pigs Are Flying!
The Talking Coffins of Cryo-City
None of them seem to fit exactly, but I figured it was worth trying!

Thank you! I will check them out and let you know!
Bump...About a third of the way through The Voyage Begun and am certain it isn't it. The Pigs Are Flying and The Talking Coffins of Cryo-City aren't it either. Thanks for your help!
Drat! Have all of these "wrong" books helped you remember more details about the "right" one, perchance?
Ugh...no...I'm starting to think I'm imagining it, or am not remembering the few details I "think" I remember correctly. If nothing else, I have got some great reads out of the suggestions.
Jayme--hang in there hun. Sooner or later SOMEONE will recognize your book. Just keep plugging away.
Plus, its only been 2 months. I had one book IDed after almost 3 years. Just keep bumping it occassionally so that it stays in peoples minds.

This was probably published too late (1999), but I just came across it and wanted to throw it out there:
The Copper Elephant it's set in a post-apocalyptic world of nonstop acid rain.

Thanks for the suggestion. It isn't it, but I am still interested in reading it!
I am halfway through The Survivors and the similarities are so close to the details that I remember such as the deadly weather and hiding in caves, that this is probably the book I am looking for. I was almost certain though that there was a rain of actual shards of glass...so I am going to move this to possibly solved and continue my search. But, in all likelihood, this is probably the book and I am combining details with another...so any other suggestions would be wonderful!
When you're ready to have us shelve this book as solved, let us know. Perhaps you're already sure!
Jayme, can you confirm now that The Survivors by Tom Godwin was your book? If so we can move this from Possibly Solved to Solved.
