message 301: by Valeria (new)

Valeria so far, I read about 8% of the books in the list (not sure how many books are those XD)
but the list changes from year to year, so I guess I'll never be able to finish it

message 302: by Lara (new)

Lara 39 - I know I won't ever finish because I'm much more interested in contemporary literature than the old classics, but it's a great resource and I'd like to read at least half!

message 303: by K.D. (new)

K.D. Absolutely (oldkd) | 248 comments 98 - I am 46 years old this year. I already have around half of the 1,001 but I am not sure if I can still get hold of the other half. Not all of those books are in our second hand bookstores. I am keeping my fingers crossed as I do not want to buy from internet. Freight cost too restrictive for office employee like me.

message 304: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (katats) | 150 comments I just finished number 88. When I first started focusing on the list I was in the fifties, so I am certainly progressing, but my rate could always be better.

message 305: by Beckie (new)

Beckie Wendorf 102 and counting! I found this great spreadsheet doing a google search a while back that has all the titles and authors. When you read a book, you put an r in the first column and it auto-totals how many you have read and how many are remaining.

message 306: by Christine (new)

Christine (diwataluna) | 2 comments I've read 31 of those in the original list. I might have higher numbers if I was a responsible college student. :p

I'm starting on #32, Life of Pi.

Although the list is a great way to get a survey of all the great works and authors, I think I'll just take it slow and sift through the list...

message 307: by Candace (new)

Candace Madera (candacemadera) I've read 58 and am on 59

message 308: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I recently joined this group b/c I have a desire to read more classics so am really excited about starting my list. I know I can get the 1001 List downloaded but I still wanted to have the book in hand so I purchased the 2006 edition from half.com. I know there are some books removed and added since that list but I think I have the updates so i thik I should be OK. Any suggestions (as far as this group rules go) about using the 2006 list (including the changes I know about) to the 2010 list?

Thanks!!

message 309: by Heather (new)

Heather Young (heyo4ever) | 2 comments I have 31 so far. Although, I'm sure it's more as there are some that I'm pretty certain I read in High School however, I didn't count them if I couldn't remember. So I'll read them again! Just got a new copy of the book and am going to pull all of the ones already on my bookshelf that I haven't read and work on those first!

message 318: by Pinelopi (new)

Pinelopi | 2 comments 143 on the 2006 version, and around 30-40 more I started but never finished. Started off badly, built up momentum on the early 1900s and after 1980 or so lost it completely again. Obviously I need to catch up on contemporary literature.

Bryn Lerud | 1 comments Hi everybody. I'm Bryn; from a suburb of Chicago. I like this list of books. I really want to buy the original book; I looked at it in Borders and it's got all kinds of interesting biographical, historical backgrounds of the books. Lots of cool pictures too. I've always been a big reader. I think I've read 141 books on the list tho some things I read many decades ago I'm fuzzy on. I'm in 3 book groups that don't usually tend to read books from this list but I've got 2 coming up which I'm excited about. Alice in Wonderland and Wise Blood.

message 321: by Dylan (new)

Dylan (greendragon06) | 1 comments I looked at the 2010 list and I have read 31 books from it... although there may have been some that I read in high school that I don't remember.I started looking at the 2006 list and there were books on there that I have read or plan to read that weren't on the 2010 list.

Maryeah I've read about 70, but I'm not going to make much progress until I finish my Pullitzer prize in fiction list (which overlaps a fair bit with this one).

I like reading Pulitzer winners more than Man Booker's. Is it the same for you?

message 325: by FromAna (new)

FromAna (fromanam) I haven't been here in over a year.
In March of '09 I said I had read 20. I just downloaded the 2010 Edition spreadsheet and I've read 34.

Tasha I just got the 2006 book version of 1001 Books ( I have the updated list 2010 book changes) and can't wait to get thru it! It looks like so much fun to go through :) I'm curious to see how many of these books I've read...

message 329: by Sissy (new)

Sissy 64 - with about 20 already on the shelves to be read. I don't think I'll ever finish the list but it does give me a lot more options for reading material. I'm a fast reader and hate buying books that I won't end up liking (or taking long to finish). This makes picking books out much easier!

message 333: by Marvin (new)

Marvin (mpvernon) I also just joined this group. I am counting the books I've read in the past so I have read 133 books from the list. Of course, I'm 59 so I have a bit of a reading history:)

Michelle (lifeasabooknerd) I am a new member and I'm still debating whether or not I should REREAD the books I read in High School and only count the ones I've tracked here on GR. If not, I've read 22 so far. Lots and LOTS of pages to go...

Hi, I feel the same way! I have read a lot of these in high school and in my teens/20s (on my own) but don't really remember, or probably appreciated, all the stories. I plan on rereading them if I get the desire to, but as far as counting my books, I go back and forth too. For me, though, as far as this group goes, I plan on starting from scratch and counting those I've read while on GR (just 2 months now). So, with that being said, I'm going to start my counting at: 1

I know how you feel. I know I have read some of the books, but not as an adult so I am in the same boat as you. I am currently reading A Passage to India and I am counting it as my first from the list.

I suggest we petition the editors to change the title to "1001 Books You Must Read"--deleting the "Before You Die". Anyway, the present title doesn't make any sense. Can you read books AFTER you die?

Ivan 120 so far...

"Before You Die...." is rather silly. I remember that my mother used to say: "I saw Frank Sinatra in concert, before he died" or Ella Fitzgerald or Nat King Cole....I used to say: "ma, please, its assumed you saw them before they died, they didn't give any concerts after." "Oh, you know what I mean. Don't be a wisenheimer." She'd watch reruns of "I Love Lucy" and say, "Oh, this is a re-run" - "ya think ma? everyone on the screen has been dead for decades". Endearing, now that she's gone too. Happy Memorial Day Ma.

Maria | 10 comments 21....I've only just realized I've read a lot of trash, though I've enjoyed some of that trash better than some of the books on the list.

message 347: by Ivan (new)

Ivan I've read thousands of books - many that should be on this list and aren't. Still, Maria, you're young, you'll put a big dent in this list yet.

So, doing that math, how many years will it take before you're down to zero? :O)
