Yes, there is a new list from the new 2008 edition of Boxall's book that made 284 changes to include more global authors such as Asian, Latin American, and East European so I am going off that list because they got rid of extra books by overrepresented authors and it seems alot more well-rounded and interesting. The new books added are quite well known in their particular regions and were often ignored by more old-school, Western based literati. A link is at http://www.listsofbests.com/list/57568
It you choose to switch having read 20 and like the list (I have enjoyed 90% of reads so far which is good) you won't lose too many reads. I was at 89 on the old list and dropped to 67 but fortunately many of the books dropped were worthwhile reads. Also, I had read many lesser known works that were more likely to be dropped with the new addition as warm ups to the more well known reads by authors so my number went down more. If I had to guess I would say with 20 reads (if you switch) you may drop on your list one to three books. I hope this helps. ALSO, 1001 books has an official site you can sort by author at http://1001beforeyoudie.com/
Sincerely, Chel

it has all the new books, and the removed ones in a separate sheet

So I'm just beneath 15% of the total. It is a ways to go before I die!

Ashamed to say that the further back you go the patchier the strike rate (got innoculation shots against Jane Austen back at school along with lock-jaw and the mumps).

Back then it was forced on us like fluoride in the tap water. Every now and then I begin to waver but when the cultural guilt gets too great I imagine waking in a morning world deserted but for the immunized survivors and it's nights peopled by the walking dead in boots and bonnets and Empire dress engaged in convoluted drawing room conversations or attending rural Dances.
And as for Dickens: well, too many damp 70's Sunday teatimes spent glued to the telly-box watching wobbly sets and the even wobblier bottom jaws of anonymous child actors did for him.

Where can the combined lists be found?

Libby, go to the home page for this group and click on "Bookshelf"

I'm reading from both! I'm better read in the American & British writers & not so well read internationally so this is fun & mind-expanding!

More will be added when I find 'my copy' of them in the library or as a friend puts it, 'Oh, you found another box of books.'
