Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) I am ashamed to say I have read 7 (I think). But in my defence I have a quite a few on my tbr shelves in my bedroom which I can read. I am also readin some for a challenge as well.

Mike | 16 comments Which ones? Also, are you reading them because they're challenging or are you challenging yourself to read them?

message 53: by Joy Marie (new)

Joy Marie I just found out about this list today...I have read 3 books off the list without knowing about it, so to those with a low number, don't feel bad. However, I am going to challenge myself to at least have 30 of them read by the end of the year in addition to the other reading I am doing. I am excited to see how far I am able to get.

message 54: by Olympia (new)

Olympia (oly366) | 10 comments I've read 20 so far. Some I may never read due to availability. Right now I'm reading Main Street by Sinclair Lewis. It's been an interesting read so far. I've read on another posting that there is a new list if this is so it just might throw off everything I've already read. Has anyone heard of this? please keep me posted to any news.

Yes, there is a new list from the new 2008 edition of Boxall's book that made 284 changes to include more global authors such as Asian, Latin American, and East European so I am going off that list because they got rid of extra books by overrepresented authors and it seems alot more well-rounded and interesting. The new books added are quite well known in their particular regions and were often ignored by more old-school, Western based literati. A link is at http://www.listsofbests.com/list/57568

It you choose to switch having read 20 and like the list (I have enjoyed 90% of reads so far which is good) you won't lose too many reads. I was at 89 on the old list and dropped to 67 but fortunately many of the books dropped were worthwhile reads. Also, I had read many lesser known works that were more likely to be dropped with the new addition as warm ups to the more well known reads by authors so my number went down more. If I had to guess I would say with 20 reads (if you switch) you may drop on your list one to three books. I hope this helps. ALSO, 1001 books has an official site you can sort by author at http://1001beforeyoudie.com/
Sincerely, Chel

Leora | 40 comments Wow, I just bought the book today and am dismayed to learn that I have only read 62 of the books. This is going to make my OCD go into overdrive. What a crazy hobby!

message 61: by Misty (new)

Misty | 5 comments I joined this group a while ago knowing I would want to look it over at some point, but I just now finally did. I looked over both lists and decided to combine them. With the combined lists, before consciously shoosing books that belong to the list, I have read and completed 59, started and left a good deal more, and have MANY of them on my to read list.
The 59 I have read are (in no part. order - except the 1st 2, as they are faves):
Cloud Atlas, Pride and Prejudice, 100 Years of Solitude, Memoirs of a Geisha, Possession, The Handmaid's Tale, Sula, The Collector, The Yellow Wallpaper, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Persuasion, Wuthering Heights, Uncle Tom's Cabin, To Kill a Mockingbird, Through the Looking Glass, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Their Eyes Were Watching God, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Slaughterhouse-Five, The Scarlet Letter, The Pit and the Pendulum, The House of Mirth, The Hobbit, The Great Gatsby, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Devil and Miss Prym, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, The Catcher in the Rye, The Bluest Eye, The Awakening, Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Sense and Sensibility, Passing, Oliver Twist, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Pippi Longstocking, Perfume, Of Mice and Men, 1984, Mansfield Park, Madame Bovary, Love in Excess, Lord of the Flies, Lolita, Little Women, Kafka on the Shore, Les Miserables, Jane Eyre, Interview with a Vampire, I know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Ethan Frome, Emma, Dracula, Dr Zhivago, Crime and Punishment, Candide, Brave New World, Beloved, and A Modest Proposal

Please dont hate me for my obnoxious long post.
:)

Silver | 313 comments I have read 62 of the books

and I am currently reading 5 of the books.

I am just staying with the list I first started with so not to confuse myself. I cannot handle too many lists changes and updates. I willjust stay on one system.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) Just joining this group, excited to read along!

I've read 138, at least 10 were in the last year or so. Great list, but a little UK-centric.

message 68: by Susan (new)

Susan | 28 comments I have read 66, working on 67 of the old list. I have about 34 from the list that I have (or know someone who has them) to work from as well.

message 69: by Cel (new)

Cel (onesixteen) | 1 comments 30. I'm 19 so I guess that isn't too bad (puts me at 16/yr if I live to life expectancy, but I really doubt I will and I'm almost sure I probably won't be reading much when I'm that old anyway). I'd like to re-read some of them though. And I still read a bunch of books that aren't included on the list. I'd like to be able to complete it, but I'd be surprised if I do.

CD | 48 comments There are 128 listed in my books as being read with 3 'to-read'. There's another dozen plus I know I've read but want to add short reviews as I update the list.

So I'm just beneath 15% of the total. It is a ways to go before I die!

message 73: by Dan (new)

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) Finished #64 last night and currently working my way through four more.

message 74: by Lazarus (new)

Lazarus P Badpenny Esq (lazarus_p_badpenny_esq) Okay. I make it 122 under the belt, 90 circling the bedside table awaiting permission to land, and now yet another wish list as long as your arm.

Ashamed to say that the further back you go the patchier the strike rate (got innoculation shots against Jane Austen back at school along with lock-jaw and the mumps).

Back then it was forced on us like fluoride in the tap water. Every now and then I begin to waver but when the cultural guilt gets too great I imagine waking in a morning world deserted but for the immunized survivors and it's nights peopled by the walking dead in boots and bonnets and Empire dress engaged in convoluted drawing room conversations or attending rural Dances.

And as for Dickens: well, too many damp 70's Sunday teatimes spent glued to the telly-box watching wobbly sets and the even wobblier bottom jaws of anonymous child actors did for him.

message 87: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) I finished Animal Farm sometime last week, so that brings me to 39 books (44 if you include the 5 from the 2006 list). Am slowly getting there...ever so slowly xD

message 88: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Just reached 63% of the original list which is over 630 but having difficulty tracking down some books on the list.

message 89: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey 21 and most were in high school.

message 90: by Leora (new)

Leora | 40 comments Deanne-I have had som luck with some of the older, more obscure titles on Gutenberg.org and also on fulltext.com. Reading them online for free isn't that bad. Just an fyi.

message 91: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 3 comments I am just using the old list. I have read 100 so far. It was around 60 when I started working on the list about 1 1/2 years ago. I have read 11 books from the old list so far this year.

message 92: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (somegrrlreads) 260 on the 2006 list, 200 on the 2008 list.

I'm reading from both! I'm better read in the American & British writers & not so well read internationally so this is fun & mind-expanding!

message 93: by Dan (new)

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) I'm at 70 from the 2006 list. One of these days I should take a look at the 2008 list and see if I've read any of the additions to the list. I guess that means that I'll eventually be keeping my count from the combined list.

message 94: by Lenoir (new)

Lenoir | 27 comments I've read 51 from the combined list and 48 of those are on the 2008 list.

message 95: by Libby (new)

Libby | 39 comments I've read 45 on the 2006 version and 52 on the 2008 version. Not nearly enough!

message 96: by Linda (new)

Linda I've read just about 100, but that's on the combined list, which I've revised to about 1120.

message 97: by Linda (last edited Apr 29, 2009 09:16PM) (new)

Linda Good for you Mike - I think when I was 16, I could probably have checked off only 5 or 6.

message 98: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 263 comments I'm up to 76 on the combined list, with 2 more that I'm currently reading.

message 99: by Dan (new)

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) Finished number 76 this afternoon. Working on two more and have three or four in my to read pile by the bed.

message 100: by CD (new)

CD | 48 comments Currently I have nearly a 160 listed as 'read' with another 15-18 as 'to-read'. There are easily 2 dozen more of the 'classic' works I've read but have not listed as I am trying to add some review or commentary beyond good or bad and a star rating to each new addition.

More will be added when I find 'my copy' of them in the library or as a friend puts it, 'Oh, you found another box of books.'
