P. (shimizusan) | 96 comments At the moment I have 120... that's only the latest list though. I did have the previous two lists but they are stuck on my old hardrive. I have 71 TBR's. 2012 is going to focus on the 1001 list. I want to be as close to 200 as possible.

Why can't we get access to the old lists anymore? I searched on Arukiyomi's website and was disappointed that they no longer existed.

Bryan, wher can I find such a list? I would dearly like to attempt the same thing.

message 755: by Bryan (new)

Bryan (bryanr) | 3 comments Hi Zee - You can find the consolidated list of all 1294 books from all three editions here.

http://www.1morechapter.com/projects/...

Also available on listology in a couple of places, but I prefer the links to the books on amazon.com that 1morechapter provides. I just finished list book #131 last night and am hoping to be somewhere near 160 - 170 by the end of 2012 (hard to read as much as I would like with 2 little ones begging for my attention!) Happy reading!

Elizabeth (Alaska) Does the free Arukiyomi list not have all 3 lists? I did make a donation for the middle list, and it has all three lists, then the combined list, and some nice statistics for percentages of all three.

message 757: by Juliana (new)

Juliana (jaldous) | 21 comments I have read at least 94. I'm keeping track of them here on goodreads.

message 758: by Jonpaul (new)

Jonpaul Out of the combined 1294 on the three lists, I have read 120. My favorites are "Infinite Jest" and "Catch-22".

message 759: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments At the start of 2012 I've got 124 books left from the 2006 list to read, and 272 of the 2008 list.

message 760: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) You rock, Deanne! I'm always inspired by your updates. :)

message 761: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kirsten48) | 35 comments I have read 126 from the 2006 list and 128 of the 1294 combined list. I'm trying to decide if I should stick with my goal of reading the 1001 from 2006 or if I should drive myself extra crazy trying to read all the books from all the lists (which I'm assuming will continue to be updated every 2 years). I guess I may have to live to about 250 years old!

message 762: by B0nnie (new)

B0nnie | 5 comments hmm, I think I'll have to read some of these *after* I die - I've read less than 100 & I also have a lot of non-list books on my to-read list - but I see Dance to the Music of Time is listed just as one book - it's 12 books, so I'm going to say this should be called 1012-books-you-must read-before-you-die

I'm with you on that, Bonnie! I'm currently reading Marcel Proust's: In Search of Lost Time (or Remembrance of Things Past) and it's only listed as one book, but it's 7! So now we're up to 1018 books, at the very least.

you're right & also like Kirsten mentions, the list is always changing - anyway, Proust should be measured in "dog years" oh yeah it's really 49 books!

message 765: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Hazeleger (eruwenfuin) | 2 comments 35, but I'm not really trying. It's a nice goal, but it'll take at least 20 years to complete one of the list, and that is if I manage to read 50 books a year xD.

message 766: by Mikela (new)

Mikela | 378 comments Currently at 134 core books and hoping to reach 175 before the end of 2012.

message 770: by Danyellemastro (new)

Danyellemastro | 170 comments 74 - was 30 this time last year and whilst 44 books might not sound like much War and Peace was one of them so it did slow me down a tad!

message 771: by FrankH (new)

FrankH | 39 comments I've read 196 from one of the more current lists, and that's a little under 20%...I'm up in years, so that's not an especially good count. The percentage goes up considerably with the 1800s and to a lesser extent, with the 1900s. On the one hand, I'm thinking I should concentrate more on the lower-percentage post millenium books, but then, theoretically, the unread classics have stood the test of time and might be inherently better books. Still, for me, it's hard to argue that something like Bronte's Tenant of Wildefll Hall is worthy of my time when compared to say Roth's The Human Stain or J.G. Ballard's Empire of the Sun.

Rory M. | 27 comments I just did a quick inventory to see if I've made any progress...

70 READ
32 Possibly read (sad but I can't remember)
12 I started but never finished

So, my goal is to figure out if I did indeed read these 32 and to finish the 12 I began - in 2012!

And I'm sad to no see more Edgar Rice Burroughs on the list (the first list is what I'm working on)!

message 773: by Mikela (new)

Mikela | 378 comments Am working on number 152 now and should be finished tomorrow.

message 774: by Velma (new)

Velma (velmalikevelvet) | 24 comments I just finished my 109th (Nicholas Nickleby). Not such a high count considering I've been reading for over 40 years, but nothing to sneeze at either.

message 775: by Natacha (new)

Natacha Pavlov (natachapavlov) | 7 comments I've only read 37. There were some of the books on the list that I own but have not yet read, which are not included in my number. I don't doubt for a second that I'll never complete the entire list, but honestly I'm not aiming to. Some of the titles did catch my attention though and I'll be looking into those. I will just say, I would have been seriously enraged and shocked if The Hunchback of Notre Dame had not been on that list... LOL =)

message 777: by Liz M (last edited Mar 10, 2012 04:36PM) (new)

Liz M Rory M. wrote: "Has anyone ever finished the list?"

Deanna is the only person, in this group, that seems to be close (at 874 in December).

The list was first published in 2006. So, even if you had read 251 books on the list before then, and were sticking to the original list, you'd have to have read 125 list books each year to be finished in 2012 (and I'm conveniently ignoring the half-dozen books or so that may not exist in a language in which you can read them).

message 778: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Up to 890 now Charity, and still managing to get hold of the books.

message 779: by Rory M. (new)

Rory M. | 27 comments Liz...thanks for responding! Once I started doing the math I realized that my 50 books a year would taking me a lifetime to get to the end!

Deanne: Wow! Did you start off with a large amount read in 2006 when the book was first published or have you just been reading away for the past 6 years?

message 780: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Started with 28 back in 2006, been reading since then.

Bucket | 248 comments Deanne, not to be creepy (but it probably is creepy that I know this!) but I've been following you for a while. Isn't that just your total for the 2006 list alone? If you include all you've read from the 2008 and 2010 lists, I think you're at 972 out of the grand total of 1294 books.

message 784: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Bucket there's a few books I haven't got on goodreads, really need to add them. I've got a list of books left to read of the combined list. I'll have to double check but I make it 1001 of the combined list.

yay! The magic number is 1001 - now you're in bonus territory!

message 786: by Caroline (new)

Caroline (carobibliophile) Hi--using the new smartphone app I've read 237 on all three lists. But some of the remaining ones that I want to read most, because I've seen them on my real aspiration list (Philip Ward's list of 500 books at http://www.interleaves.org/~rteeter/g... ) I can't find in English even though the lists use an English title. Example, The Devil to Pay in the Backlands by Joao Guimaraes Rosa. Any suggestions on where to find? ( I can't learn Portuguese and still read the remaining books in one lifetime. )

Using Worldcat.org, I see it is held by the Berkeley Public Library. I would guess that is a library that Sacramento County would probably use for an inter-library loan. If not, it still seems worthwhile to check with your library to see where they might be able to get a copy to borrow for you.

Way to go! That's an amazing feat, Deanne. :)

message 793: by Mikela (new)

Mikela | 378 comments Deanne, that is really awesome!!! Even though you will soon run out of list books (if you haven't already) I imagine you've found some authors that have other non-list books that might appeal to you and you can now explore without pressure. Congratulations!! Wow, I feel so inspired.

message 794: by Deanne (new)

Deanne | 681 comments Reached 901, now have 100 books left to read.
Still finding new authors, mainly those not from the UK or US. Just wondering how much change there will be with the 2012 edition.

Deanne, that is amazing! You are my proof that it can be done. Thank you.

message 797: by Wiltshire Hermit (new)

Wiltshire Hermit I've read 95 from the list so far by my count, and I own another 113 in my personal library...to add to the 685 other volumes NOT on the list to read.

:o

Yes I have a MASSIVE 'to-read' mountain at home!

message 798: by Katherine (new)

Katherine (katats) | 150 comments I just finished number 111. It's ridiculous how much I enjoy marking another book off the list. I enjoy it far too much.

message 799: by Mikela (new)

Mikela | 378 comments I've finished 179, of which 146 are on all lists. Will be able to mark off another by tonight. My problem is that I so like some authors that I have to explore their off list books as well.
