I second that!! I think her Alpha and Omega series is even better than her Mercedes Thompson series. :D

Robyn Jones Her anthologies on the Mercy series are great too. Check out the titles and blurbs at her website. http://www.patriciabriggs.com/books/

My favorites are the one about Warren, "Down These Strange Streets" and the one about Adam's army buddy David Christiansen "Wolfsbane and Mistletoe" Oh, and if you've read the Alpha and Omega series then in "Strange Brew" you read about the blind witch from Hunting Ground.

Missyb I like this series, but I enjoy Indian folklore. I enjoy the wolfs, vampires, and fae. I really like the relationship Mercy has with each one, especially Adam & his daughter. Some of the books are better then others, but they are a good series, plenty of action & mystery in each one.

I have read the anthologies, too, Robyn. I thought Briggs's stories were among the best in each book: Wolfsbane and Mistletoe (fun holiday reading) and Strange Brew (meet Tom and Moira from A&O book 2, set in Seattle)

Briggs is one of the best out there for anthologies. Most authors create too short of a story like the Sookie Stackhouse tidbits. I like meatier stuff to bite into. I like Rachel Caine's Morganville shorts because we get insights into our favorite characters. You have any favorites?

I have only begun to fight read urban fiction, whether short stories or full length, so my scope is limited. So far, anything by Patty Briggs is quite good. I also enjoyed The Edge series, by Ilona Andrews, especially book 2, Bayou Moon (would love a short story involving William). I read a few short stories by Andrews. I liked Magic Dreams, a novella. Silent Blade was okay, but too much like a love story. See my reviews for more details.

I don't want urban fantasy to be driven by romance, but I do like a plot-driven, coherent, suspenseful romantic fantasy. Characterization matters, too. These are the reasons I prefer Briggs over any others so far.

You might like Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter series. It's pretty dark and her world building is amazing.

Kathleen Robyn wrote: "You might like Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter series. It's pretty dark and her world building is amazing."

I have read her Changeling series. Some books are pretty good, but I wonder if she has a long-range plot in mind for the Psy Council, or if she is making it up as she goes along. As for the Guild series, I can't imagine a vamp as a love interest -- but then again, I haven't read any UF-R with vampires.

Guild Hunter doesn't tap into vamp romance for several books. You have the Angels (who make vamps) and the hunters who wrangle any runaway/bad vamps. It's very different from the Changelings because romance takes front and center in the shifter books, but the story/plot heads the show for Guild Hunter. The only thing about Singh is that after the first four books she really gets lyrical with her descriptions and I find that distracting. I like straight to the point, not five paragraphs on the sky. What is your regular cup of tea if UF-R is a new interest? I like a range, mystery, Y/A, childrens, UF, total escapism stuff.

Oh, and I don't know where Singh is going with the Changling books, the last couple have been hard for me to get through.

Kathleen I have read romance for years. I also read fantasy and suspense. Never dreamed I'd like UF, but everyone was raving so much, I decided to try them.

I agree with you on the Changeling series. Just not enough plot advancement to hold my interest anymore, and the romance takes center stage.

Maybe I will try Guild Hunters. I like the idea of a plot-driven romance, but I'm not crazy about lengthy descriptions (and I really hate lots of internal dialogue -- especially when the character repeats her (or his) thoughts). Hope Singh doesn't do that?

Millie Yes it's a good book! Idk about the rest cause I haven't read them all, but I wanna get them! :)

Lynndsie Hamilton I've read the whole series and love it! I'm a series addict and always on the prowl for something new.

I have enjoyed all but the last book - River Marked (Mercy Thompson, #6) by Patricia Briggs - but I am hoping the next book will be better

I can't wait for Frost Burned.

The last one had so much fae/Native American lore in it, but I liked the whole ghost dad bit.

Lynndsie Hamilton I know, while I wait I have to fill my time with other series. Which really isn't fair to great books that stand alone.

I missed the rest of the pack and didn't like the (view spoiler)the native american theme and the ghost dad was ok - it just was not Mercy like for me

Kathleen I actually did enjoy River Marked, even though it was set at a national park / campground far from the Tri-Cities (so the rest of the pack was not there) and had native American themes. The relationship building between Mercy and Adam was good, even though the river monster was a bit hokey. And I liked Coyote Joe. He may show up in a sequel. (I do wish Briggs would keep children safe)

The river monster took some fuzzy thinking on my part. Did you read her spin off series with Anna and Charles because I'm wondering how the Fae will be portrayed now after Fair Game. Frost Burned is on my Christmas list and my sister already let it slip (because she can't help herself) that I'm getting that book. It will be nice to have the pack back in the storyline.

Paris (kerbytejas) Robyn wrote: "Kathleen wrote: "I actually did enjoy River Marked, even though it was set at a national park / campground far from the Tri-Cities (so the rest of the pack was not there) and had native American th..."

yes I have read all of the Alpha & Omega series. there is no change in the Fae yet as Fair game came after the last A&O book...now there could be a change in future A&O books????
I am expecting a change in Frost Burned which i think I have a pre-order for already

Kathleen @ Robyn, Yeah, there was certainly something "fishy" about the River Monster (J) and the whole plot was like a B movie, hokey as all get out. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it, because I didn't try to think too much about it. That would hurt my head, for sure ;-)

@ Paris and Robyn, I predict that Frost Burned is gonna involve the organization of an "in your face" Fae faction that is more aggressively outré than we've ever seen before, especially in their dealings with humans (and I can't blame them, after how the judge and jury ruled in Fair Game). Briggs has always portrayed the Fae as dangerous, secretive, and sly, even though some are more benevolent than others. I expect there will still be some "good" fae. I'm hoping that Samuel's love, Ariana, from Silver Borne, will play a role in Frost. :-)

Robyn Jones Kathleen wrote: "@ Robyn, Yeah, there was certainly something "fishy" about the River Monster (J) and the whole plot was like a B movie, hokey as all get out. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it, because I didn't try to thin..."

I think the vamp seethe (sp?) will be called in to help Mercy. I remember reading that on Briggs' website. Okay, so I do check in time to time with the posts (by her husband), and I think last year's Black Friday shopping spree inspired the storyline to Frost Burned (holiday shopping and doom and gloom).

Paris (kerbytejas) Kathleen wrote: "@ Robyn, Yeah, there was certainly something "fishy" about the River Monster (J) and the whole plot was like a B movie, hokey as all get out. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it, because I didn't try to thin..."

I can't think of his name but I hope the guy that owns the Fae bar/tavern remains a good guy - I have enjoyed the scenes in his bar and there have been many throughout the series, plus he been helpful in the past

by the way who has the walking stick these days - I've forgotten?

Kathleen @Robyn, interesting! Good to know. I like the seethe who drives the vw ( you're not talking about the female seethe are you)

@Paris, Who has the walking stick? Coyote Joe, from River Marked. Mercy gave it to him at the end. Am I right?
Hmmm...I think the barkeeper will remain in jolly good "spirits" to all (J)

thanks for the walking stick info - that seems to bring back the memory of reading that

I thought the VW was driven by a vampire (Stephan?) - the guy that Mercy bought the garage from, he fills in for her when she is away

Stephan owns the Mystery Maching van. Zee (Fae) is the one who owned the garage and fills in for Mercy.

I'm terrible with names and faces. I hate it. I'm so far from snobby, but I almost wish I were because then I'd just be a jerk not a girl who can't remember a person she talked to several different times.

I think Mercy will have to go to Stephan's queen for help. All I'm pretty sure of is that a shopping trip goes batty for the pack.

understood...LOL
and I work from home so I have limited contact with people so the name to face doesn't always sink in - when i woked in the field i would remember the customer's problem and what building/ floor they were on - but when i saw them i just look at them like duh??? and heaven forbid i meet them in a grocery store

Robyn Jones I know! At the grocery store today I passed a dad I've talked to many times and I didn't say anything, though part of it is his fault since he's apparantly dedicated himself to the full face beard route. When I was a TA in college I had all the students names memorized the first day (small class), but I worry motherhood is slowly dissolving my brain.

OK, thanks for clarifying, Robyn. I was getting Stephan the vw-driving vampire mixed up with the seethe queen. LOL -- that's like mixing up Santa and Stalin !!

Robyn Jones A fangy kind of hot Santa.

Kimberly Green A great series!!! Can't wait until March.

I agree. Personally, I prefer the older fantasy ones.

Amy Lynn Great series! I started reading them quite awhile ago after picking the first one up randomly at the library. If you appreciate a strong female lead and paranormal characters, than this series is for you. I cannot wait until the release of the next one!

Daphne Melay I love this series especially because of all the werewolf-stuff. You get to learn a lot about the werewolves of this series and it's fascinating and exciting.
Also, the characters are awesome, I do not have a single character in this series that I can't stand.
Just give it a try :)

I do like this series but I think there are slow spots and some books in the series are a little boring. Check out Kim Harrisons Hollows series if you haven't already. Book one is Dead Witch Walking.
