This book 0027583600 has an incorrect cover image attached. I actually removed the image but it somehow came back and now there's no delete image option on the edit page of the book. There is no image of this hardcover edtion so far as I know on here -- nor for any of the others of this series edition. I have the physical book in my hands so know the info is correct otherwise though the info is also on a paperback edition of the book here on Goodreads -- I gave up untangling the two as I was afraid of making the tangle worse.

Dottie, that means that the cover image is being picked up directly from Amazon now.

Is the cover image for the wrong book, or does it simply not match your edition? You might have an edition which had different cover art but the same ISBN; that happens occasionally.

Actually, it happens quite a lot. Amazon most often has the most recent cover; older editions using the same ISBN can be entered manually (with no ISBN, but the ISBN mentioned in the description field).

The cover image attached to the book is for a Puffin Edition -- so that's wrong, right?

The cover art on my book is for one of two versions of the series published by MacMillan. This series shows only the 1950's original pub date and has plain cloth hardcovers in various colors, each with an ink drawing in a corner and has ink drawing illustrations within the books as well. The other version has hardcovers with images that match the images on the dust jackets and I am thinking that set came out later -- maybe in the 1970's. Neither set of cover images seems to be anywhere I've checked.

Is there a way to get that Puffin edition cover detached from the MacMillan book?

Yes. Uploading a replacement image will do it.

But that's just where the trouble lies, there is no replacement image -- the replacement should be the little image which says there is no cover available.

My question is why couldn't the delete this image take effect rather than kicking over to the direct to Amazon link?

Because for the vast majority of books, the Amazon image is the correct image. It's one of the ways GR saves on storage space, I believe.

Dottie, can you scan your book, or find an image you know is correct that someone else has scanned and uploaded elsewhere? If you can't, you could just use a blank image as a placeholder and leave a librarian's note on the edition that the correct cover isn't available.

That is what I want -- a blank image -- that was what I tried to do. But there is no way to delete this image on the books page. The edit page did have a button "Delete photo" under the cover image but now it's not there. When that button disappeared from the edit page for this book is when I came here because I thought some other librarian could figure this out and switch this edition to a blank cover image. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a scanner.sigh.

Dottie, what I mean is this: take whatever image software you have, make a completely blank image, and upload that as the cover image. (Or make an image that just has the book title, or something that's clearly a lack-of-cover placeholder; someone a while back had a nice set of them for cloth-bound hardcovers.)

I still believe that when we delete the photo of a cover there should be options which come up so we can simply click on the bland but truthful 'no cover image is available' icon which is all around Goodreads and is what I was aiming to have happen. This also points up why I do very, very little in the way of libraian tasks though I have joined up. I try very hard not to make matters worse or tangle up already tangled info. I do polish up the very simple things I see -- like putting articles like of and the into titles when they've been left out -- which I did this morning. I know many of you work really hard around here -- and people like me who aren't as sure of their capabilities nor as aware of the remdeies available to us really appreciate your efforts.

I feel I've been rather whiny here -- but I think it is simply that I am disturbed by so many cover images not found and so much book info seems to be jumbled or incorrect that it makes me uncomfortable. I really believe getting the info correct is paramount and I'm wondering if we are missing sources for cover images which would be more reliable than Amazon.

90-95% of the cover images available on the 'net are either from Amazon or identical to what they have. Especially if we're talking about a book more than 10-15 years old. I have sometimes found better images and uploaded them instead of an Amazon image. And I do have access to a scanner, so that helps.

GR gets a lot of accurate information from Amazon's API. Imagine if each and every new book had to be entered manually! But with that accurate information comes all sorts of disinformation. And that's why there's us. :)

Question: I have found a number of few audio CD's that either have no cover or the wrong cover (one is a book cover, not from cd's). I have the physical CD's that I can scan, but they have the library sticker on them as well. I can edit the images to blank that out I'm sure, but the images won't perfectly match--Is this an okay thing to do?

For Sacred Hunger 9780140119930 I have scanned my edition's cover which is different from the one on the site. I do not know how to add an alternate cover for an already-listed book.

Hi all,

I just got Librarian Status and followed JG's instructions for adding an alternate cover. I read the Librarian's Manual but couldn't find it.

I had the Blue and Red cover on the GR book, and it wasn't the cover on mine. After I added it manually I also combined it with the other editions, which wasn't mentioned, but seemed proper. I needed to be able to switch editions.

I have a question about the page count. Do you put the total number of pages in the book in, or only the page count for the story ? This book has numbered pages after the story that are author questions and excerpts of 3 other books.

I also have a question about changing a picture on a book.

There is no picture there, but no default book cover to show it is missing a cover. When I go into edit there is the link to delete photo, but no picture. Is there something there that only I am unable to see. I have a cover on my computer so I can add it, but will I be screwing up others if I delete it ? Doing an alternate cover for a book without one seems a bit much. I looked in the change log and the only thing done was changing the description to "First Edition".

Did someone update the book from Amazon and let it override what was there ? A quick glance shows no covers on Amazon.

So can someone please tell me how to proceed.

Author questions, author afterword, etc. all get counted. Excerpts from or ads for other books should not be.

That other book had a photo that was of nothing. Why? Since there's nothing in the log, I'm guessing we can blame Amazon. Please do upload a cover image if you have one! (I deleted the blank one.)
